On one side of the stone bulwark is England; on the other, Faerie. Once every nine years, the guard is relaxed so that the villagers can attend a fair held in a nearby meadow. There, as a young man, Dunstan Thorn is seduced by a strange woman, and not quite a year later a child is left at the wall. His name is Tristran Thorn. When he grows up, he falls in love with Victoria Forester, and to win her affection, he vows to bring to her the fallen star that they see one night. The star has fallen in Faerie, and though Tristran soon finds her (for in Faerie a star is not a ball of flaming gas, but a living, breathing woman), he has a hard time holding on to her. The sons of the Lord of Stormhold also seek the star, for it is said that he who finds her can take his father's throne. In addition, the oldest of three evil witches seeks the star, for her heart can grant youth and beauty. While the bones of the story?the hero, the quest, the maiden?are traditional, Gaiman offers a tale that is fresh and original. Though the plot begins with disparate threads, by the end they are all tied together and the picture is complete. An Amazing Modern Fairy Tale

Neil Gaiman's "Statdust" is a fairy tale for adults. Set in the last days of Victoria's reign, Tristan Thorn lives in the village of Wall, England and travels beyond the wall into the realm of Faerie to recover a fallen star for his beloved. Along the way, he encounters sky pirates, witches, murderous princes, and more. Those familiar with the film will find differences here, but Gaiman's writing evokes the best of classic fantasy and fairy tales, with characters and language both tragic and hopeful, ugly and beautiful, as befits the best stories. This gift edition contains art by Charles Vess that, coupled with its physical appearance, evokes the classic fairy tale volumes of the early twentieth century.

I am not sure what happened..

Stardust follows Tristan Thorn as he leaves his town and ventures into a magical realm beyond the wall. He is on a journey to collect a fallen star for his love interest..
I am going to start off by saying something I never thought I would say; I honestly enjoyed the film more than the book. Okay, you may now ostracize me. The story was a beautiful concept, and I am a huge fan of the author. I am also very fond of fantasy and enjoy reading the genre on a regular basis. I am by no means labeling this as a bad read. I did find it entertaining. I just wanted to enjoy this so much more than I was able to. I wanted to love this book. With a world full of magic and exotic creatures, I expected nonstop excitement, but somewhere along the line it just fell flat for me. It pains me to even type this. As I said, I really respect Neil Gaiman as an author.
I kept waiting for that moment when something within this story would really speak to me, but it never happened. You have a fallen star, witches, a unicorn, spirits, and no shortage of magic so this seems like the perfect recipe for an amazing tale of fantasy, and I know many who really believe it is. However, the end result left me desiring too much. I felt that the characters could have been built on more, and that overall the story just began to crawl.
I know many people may disagree with this review, and I do honestly recommend reading this book for yourself if you enjoy fantasy. It has the right elements. Maybe I missed something with this one. I am left unsure of just how I feel after finally having read this title.

Gaiman's Best Novel

I really think this is my favorite novel of Gaiman's. I think his comics are nothing less that works of art. I used to think he was mainly a comic book story teller. I say that with full appreciation and acknowledgement of comic books as an approach to story/literature that is fully valid as a work of art, and fascinating in its own right. I think Gaiman is one of the few comic book storytellers who have elevated the genre to this level of validity, in fact. But I've always been a bit disappointed by his novels. They are fun, fantasy worth reading and buying, even in hard-cover, so that's not something to sneeze at, but nothing like his comics, which are worth paying full price, and buying two - one to read, and one to put on your bookshelf for posterity.
Stardust is where Gaiman finds his novel footing, I feel. I think the 'fairy-tale' feel this novel has, with its unexpected and dreamlike plot and unexpected magic are just perfect for his wit and humor, as well as his playful mythological foundations. I LOVE fairy tales, and to read Gaiman's always interesting and playful rendition of an ancient genres felt in this case like a resurrection of this long forgotten form of story-telling. I left wanting more, and felt utterly transported to this new feel in fantasy that I only had a glimpse of through Grimm's fairy tales. I felt like I was experiencing what Grimm's fairy tales must have felt like to the listeners when such fairy tales were new!
I really hope he explores this approach to fantasy again, perhaps not a sequel, but this is the first novel of Gaiman's that I felt matched the quality and beauty that his Sandman comics captured.
