Coherence Is What Makes Us Human Beings

What if poetry were written for the sake of butter. And I'm thinking mainly of butter, how it coagulates on the plate when you leave it out with the dirty dishes. You're wanting to put off the dishes. Just for a little bit. And the butter is like, OK. Now it is butter coagulating. The object correlative necessary to consider how coherence is a process, our understanding of coherence is not so neat and tidy as we'd like to think. Are you thinking about water, and the water gathering in small places and large places? That's one form of cohering.

Another is the impulse in animals to gather around death. And acknowledge some strange difficulty that everyone is having together about this one event. Look at how elephants do it. It's easier to think of it when elephants are doing it, because when people do it our peopleness keeps getting in the way of us seeing the natural fact of the matter.

Excellent Reference Text but Beware of Formatting Problems for Mathematical Symbols

As a graduate returning to study after 10 years out of academia, I found Goldstein (the course text) to be, while an excellent resource, a little difficult to follow at times, as I lack or have forgotten too much foundational Physics. Even though as far as I can tell so far he reaches about the same level, Aruldhas just seems to have a way of starting from more elementary principles and reaching the graduate level the book is aimed at quickly and concisely. As such, it's an excellent addition to my resources at hand as I tackle classical mechanics, and very well priced!

However, there's one small but significant problem with this text, for which reason this should only be a secondary resource. It appears to have been scanned and OCR'd from a hard copy book (or possible lecture notes) and therefore many symbols written within the text do not show up, or show incorrectly, which could be very misleading if it was your only reference text. For example. a small Greek delta and a lowercase 'd' both appear the same (a lowercase d) even though they are meant to represent closely related but conceptually very different quantities. Derivations (which make up the majority of non-standard text) are easy to follow as they are inserted as images, which come up fine. It's just when quantities are referred to in the text that it's problematic. I hope the author will fix this, as it would make this an excellent reference text on classical mechanics.

So if this were to be your main resource it would be confusing, or even dangerously misleading, but it makes an excellent secondary resource. But at its current price there's little to complain about, and it's the best three dollars I've spent in a long time!

An amateur effort at best. I get the sense that the author started ...

This book is...well, disappointing to be honest. Grammatical errors and typos abound for one thing. For another thing, the sample syntax uses elements from previous topics in ways that were never covered or explained. This is especially true in later chapters. There are no exercises and no projects that tie multiple concepts together. In short, it's poorly written and incomplete. An amateur effort at best.

I get the sense that the author started out with a nice vision, put together an ambitious outline, and then got overwhelmed and burned out writing the first draft. So he just submitted the first draft to the publisher. And the publisher didn't even run it by a copy editor. Heck, it may even be self-published. Anyway, if you couldn't already tell, my advice is don't waste your money with this one.

( For what it's worth, I also bought a copy of Head First SQL at the same time. The contrast is night and day, boys and girls. Head First is much more money, but I don't feel stupid for buying that one.)

Amateur quality with grammatical and technical errors, and very poor explanations of concepts

An extremely amateur piece of writing. Problems include numerous grammatical errors, technical errors (such as describing the NULL value as a data type, and several coding errors), mentioning terms or concepts that have not yet been explained (such as primary keys, dropping tables) or in some cases are never explained (such as STORAGE clauses), and formatting code examples so that they are barely legible. The author has a large series of similarly titled books on many different topics, all with large numbers of suspiciously generic 5 star reviews which push them to the top of search results.

Save your money!

Yeah so I'm really feeling embarrassed and a bit angry about this purchase. The positive reviews here are fake and I didn't take the time to look closely at them before wasting my money on this "book". This is a self-published pamphlet (print-on-demand) that isn't much more than the first week's class notes from a SQL101 class. Don't believe the positive reviews, spend your money on a book with some depth, and my lesson is to look more closely at the timing and structure of positive reviews in the future. Amazon needs to up their game with fake reviews, I got caught on this one.

This reunion with her mentor Blackie allows Chi to slowly move closer and closer to that long awaited reunion with her own cat family. In her nearly thirty year career, Konami has penned more than a dozen comic series, with the majority of them focusing on cats and pets. Five stars for the book, 1 star for the price!

My 9 and 12 year old girls LOVE this series! It is cute - it's like a comic book series with cute ("Kawai!", according to my girls) colorful drawings without any violence, telling the story of a mischievous little kitten. If you love comics, and love kittens, this is the book for you.
I would definitely buy the entire collection, because my kids go through each book in about 15 mins. But why, of why, do they have to be SO EXPENSIVE?? you'd think you're buying a hardback, luxury model for that price. It's just a small paperback, less than 150 pages, nothing special.
So I gave it 5 stars because the books are great. However, I think the size and quality of these books don't warrant the price.

Super cute and great for all ages...we finally see Chi get angry...

This was another adorable volume in the Chi’s Sweet Home series. This is a great series that is cute and funny and wonderful for all ages of readers.

Chi has settled into her new home and is now starting to explore around. She meets a number of new cats, including Cocchi who is the first kitten around her age she has ever known. Chi is starting to realize that a cat is something different and separate from the people she lives with.

This book is full of hilarity and cuteness just like all of the rest. Chi learns about vacuum cleaners and how to push things down stairs. The Yamada family learns about cat-proofing the house. Many of these scenes had my whole family laughing out loud.

We see a new less warm and fuzzy side to Chi in this book as well, Cocchi is kind of a bratty, angry cat. Chi has moments of anger too and is not always happy and cute. Okay, well she is still pretty cute when she’s angry….

The illustration is wonderful just like with the previous installments. Both cat and human emotion is portrayed well.

This is one of my 7 year old son’s favorite series to read still. At night before he goes to bed he always comes bouncing into the room with the latest Chi’s Sweet Home book, “Can we read Chi tonight? Can we!?”

Overall another wonderfully hilarious and cute Chi book. My whole family really enjoys these. I would definitely recommend this whole series to cat lovers of all ages.

Chi Gets Angry

It's getting hard to say anything different about each volume as each one is as pleasing as the last. There is no plot, nothing really happens other than a series of events but it is all so sweet, realistic, cute and amusing. I've gotten used to Chi's character now and don't actually laugh out loud anymore but I'm still smiling and chuckling to myself at her realistic feline reactions. This volume mostly takes place outside as Chi explores the neighbourhood meeting up with the neighbourhood pets and Chi is introduced to another kitten who isn't as friendly as she is. When in the house Chi is becoming quite active now and causing quite a bit of trouble. Chi is not just lovable anymore either; she has an angry side which frequently shows its face this volume but she's just as cute when she's angry! Four more volumes to go in the series but taking a little break now so I can come back to them refreshed. Highly recommend this series though.

About the Author
Samuel Bowles heads the Behavioral Sciences Program at the Santa Fe Institute. He previously taught economics at Harvard University, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Siena. He is the author, most recently, of Microeconomics: Behavior, Institutions, and Evolution (2004), A Cooperative Species: Human Reciprocity and its Evolution (2011, with Herbert Gintis) and articles in Science, Nature, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Public Economics and other academic journals. He has also served as an economic advisor to presidential candidates Robert F. Kennedy and Jesse Jackson, and former South African President Nelson Mandela and has taught crash courses in economics to trade unionists, community activists and others.

Herbert Gintis holds faculty positions at the Santa Fe Institute and Central European University. He is the author of "Game Theory Evolving" (Princeton), coauthor of "A Cooperative Species: Human Reciprocity and Its Evolution" with Samuel Bowles (Princeton), and the coeditor of numerous books, including "Moral Sentiments and Material Interests", "Unequal Chances" (Princeton), and "Foundations of Human Sociality".

Nonsense

This book is just an incoherent collection of fancy words and phrases (like crowd psychology, feedback systems, fractals, etc). The book is supposed to show the scientific basis behind technical analysis. But, the reasoning (or lack thereof) is mediocre at best. I got the feeling that the author wants the book to sound scientific without any science.

In certain cases, the book makes conclusions that are absolutely and shockingly false. For example, in page 58, the author makes a conclusion that boils down to this: as you increase the window of a moving average, there will be a very high correlation between the values of the moving average at any two times T and T-1. Hence, the author claims, this (the high correlation) shows that financial markets are predictable!!

This "reasoning" is absolutely ridiculous. Moving averages BY DEFINITION smooth out curves and hence increase correlation between time steps of the smoothed curve. In fact, if the window is large enough the value of the moving average will be approximately constant and that will imply that the correlation between T and T-1 is almost 1. This will be the case for almost ANY stationary data series. Does that make any such data series predictable?! Absolutely not!

This book is a masterpiece.
It explains the WHYs of financial markets. Why do greed and fear drive prices? Why is it so hard to escape them? Why does Fiboncacci retracements work? Why does history repeat itself?

If you are concerned with the HOWs, skip the book.
If you are a beginner, skip the book.

If you are ready to question your deepest understandings of human matters, how you personnally interreact with prices, then this book will become your bible.

His book is based on a program he has developed for schools and libraries in which storytelling becomes an integral part of the curriculum, not just an entertainment. After a solid discussion of why integration of storytelling in schools and libraries is a good idea, he goes on to discuss the different kinds of tales and offers specific telling techniques that can facilitate the kind of experience he thinks storytelling should be. In the last chapter, which is his very personal view of storytelling, Zipes looks at classic tales, so often featuring abused children, and correlates them to what is happening with child abuse today. About the Author
Dr Yalom is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Stanford University. He has won two major awards from the American Psychiatric Association. He continues to run his clinical practice and lectures widely.

Same as "Open Letter to a New Generation..."

I believe that this is the same as Yalom's "The Gift of Therapy: Open Letter to a New Generation of Psychotherapists." Am I mistaken? The cover and sub-title are different, but the content is the same, yes? The "open letter" is a wonderful book. See my review and others under that title.

At any rate... Consider ordering Yalom's DVD "The Gift of Therapy." It is a one hour interview with Yalom that supplements the material in the book. The "Open Letter" book also clarifies themes that show up in Yalom's novels.

Enjoyable as well as informative

This is a book borne of experience rather than theory. What Irvin D Yalom does here is offer counselors and psychotherapists the benefit of his own discoveries about what works. While he does make occasional reference to various schools of thought (e.g. neo-Freudian) it is clear that his interest is in getting "alongside" people rather than in analyzing or diagnosing them. Indeed, he cautions against diagnoses and advises therapists to view those who seek their help as "fellow travelers" (rather than as afflicted clients).

Not being a therapist myself, I am not able to comment from that particular perspective, but it seems to me that what Yalom is writing about is the kind of pastoral care that, in the past, many people may have sought from their priests, ministers or rabbis. It is interesting that Yalom dislikes the term "client" (which suggests a business relationship), preferring instead to use the term "patient" (which seems rather more clinical)--but "parishioner" might almost be a more fitting expression (though, presumably, there cannot be too great a "flock" of "parishioners" at any one time!). I make this comment because Yalom appears, essentially, to be urging therapists to act as secular clergy, supporting and empathizing with individuals and, on occasions, giving them direction.

Given his relational/pastoral emphasis, it is unsurprising that he is dismissive of particular fixed approaches to therapy. He is certainly critical of the Person-Centered Approach pioneered by Carl Rogers, but he reserves some of his most scathing remarks for formulaic "evidence-based therapies" such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).

The Gift of Therapy is actually an enjoyable as well as informative read, precisely because it stresses relationship with the human subject rather than adherence to a method.

Suggested for therapists, or those entering the field

If Yalom seems pleased with himself, it's probably because he is, and I'd say he deserves to be. He is quite a good writer, and apparently an excellent clinician as well!

I read this book just before I started my Masters in Social Work, and I feel like I really ought to read it again now that I'm a practicing clinician.
