There are few books I still use after having purchased them in school. This is one of those great books that is not easily replaced with other books or online tools. I don't use it all the time, but when I do, I am always pleased. It is excellent at expanding my differential when I have a patient coming in with a vague or general complaints. If you work in primary care, I think it is worth a look. Its not that expensive and its price is well under the value I get from it in practice. Every so often I will just pick it up and look at the concise section on "nausea" or "headache" to help broaden my considerations. It provides algorithms for diagnosis and some information on % of eventual diagnosis based on chief complaint. Great book.

I purchased this book for a med school class but I started reading it before. For anyone with even a little clinical experience (shadowing, scribing, etc.), it is a fascinating read and very helpful. I can't wait to put it into practice.

Useful for medical diagnostic courses
By richmotk
The Patient History provides useful advice about how to figure out the differential diagnosis, and how to pick the correct diagnosis. The book includes a lot of tables which may include, for example, a column of symptoms and a column for the differential. If you prefer text to tables, this book may not be ideal: while it contains useful text, the tables include info not in the text. Keep in mind that this is not a pathophysiology textbook, and as such, the chapter on headaches won't include a lot of material about what causes headaches--just how to diagnose different types of headaches. Overall, this book is most useful for medical courses focusing on the diagnostic process.
