Angst Relief for the Weary Mind

I have found Ellis Potter's thoughts to be most helpful in better understanding the meaning of real love and interpersonal relationships. His unassuming yet profound work has given me a framework for thinking about reality that has relieved some of the anxiety that exists in the minds of those of us who are perhaps too often preoccupied in seeking for ways to find unity and personal meaning in the midst of diversity and apparent impersonal chaos.
His honest approach to this topic has enabled me to see more clearly a connection between a monist materialistic worldview, where the material world is all that exists and everything is material, and a spiritual monist worldview, where god is all that exists and everything is god. Both views say that reality is absolutely one, a singularity. Another worldview that could be summarized by the words "everything is essentially nothing," falls into a monist perspective as well. This helps me to see some philosophical similarities between atheism, Hinduism and Buddhism that I had not noticed.
It has also given me tools that allowed me to understand better the similarities and differences between an Islamic and Koranic view of reality and the view of reality presented in the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures (Torah, Zebur, Incil; Bible). There is a saying in Turkish,"God alone exists in solitude" or "Loneliness is unique to Allah." ("Yanlızlık Allah'a mahsustur"). So Allah is loving as an act of His will, but Allah cannot be love in His essential nature, because reality originally was not interpersonal. The God and Father of Jesus Christ, always existed in relationship (the fellowship of the Holy Spirit). So the truth that "God is love" makes sense philosophically, for God is God alone, but God has never been alone.
If you are a truth-seeker, skeptic, free thinker, atheist or former-atheist (like me) or if you are looking for peace of mind, meaning in reality or a reason to love, I believe you will find Ellis' book thought provoking, intriguing, and perhaps even life changing. And if you are a spiritual or religious person I think you may find some of your paradigms challenged and your foundations either shaken or bolstered by reading this book. Ellis has helped me to ask good questions and to see some answers to questions I have asked for a long time such as: What is love? Why do we love? Where does love come from? How can I find meaning in the Matrix of city life? Is emotional closeness and real love sustainable in human relationships?
I'm glad for the release of a Kindle version.

three ways to see the world

do you know the nagging feeling of unnamed reality? well, this book has been a relief: thank you, mister potter!, for your personal, concise and short outline of the three main ways in which people do interpret reality. philosophically reasonable and comprehensively shaped questions, answered in an often surprisingly short but soundly logical way.
one does not have to share all of mr potters conclusions to value his ingenious way to stir the central questions and to create an encouraging atmosphere to tackle them.
surprisingly: though the writer is a western theist believer, he seems actually to be able to talk about the reasons for his decisions in a comprehensive manner ;-)
a good work, with obviously a rich and broad experience of the matter behind it.
ps: could somebody inform me, in case any discussions about it are going on somewhere?

This is an extremely enlightening book

How many times do you get to read a book written by a former Zen Buddhist monk who became a Christian studying under Francis Schaeffer? Ellis Potter may be the only person on the planet who has that distinction and his perspective is enlightening.
Potter's writing has a dry sense of humor and is very easy to read. Before you know it you're actually enjoying reading about the major worldviews shared among humans. It's also fairly short and can be read in a couple of hours if you don't stop to think about it too much.
Unlike most modern day "Christian" books (I question whether some of them really are), Potter is not dogmatic but informative and illustrative. You can disagree, no problem, but know why.
It's incredibly refreshing to read a book that can talk about religion and worldviews in a reasonable manner. It can spark great discussions among people regardless of their own worldview. I highly recommend reading it several times and discussing it with others.
