A tips and techniques book

[[VIDEOID:mo24NX5ZX0SJ2WD]]Beginner's Guide to Creating Manga Art is a more of a tips and techniques book rather than a structured course on drawing manga from start to end. The book covers only characters.
It starts with lessons on features, expressions, anatomy, poses, clothing and character designs. The lessons are brief and are covered under 30 pages. For example, for drawing of heads, the front and sides are taught. But for heads at other angles, while there are illustrated examples with guidelines, there aren't enough in depth explanation to go with it. This section is just an introduction on figure drawing.
The second part of the book features tutorials from various artists on designing characters. There are many useful tips on drawing, what type of materials to use and things to look out for. Many artists are using traditional medium but there are a few tutorials on Photoshop.
The third part is on colouring the characters that were drawn in the previous chapter. The tutorials cover a variety of tools that are used, such as coloured pencils, markers, watercolour and Photoshop. Again, there are good tips on handling the specific mediums.
The last few pages feature a manga art gallery from various artists.
Overall, this book is more on understanding the style of manga art, and the tutorials that show you how to create them.
For beginners, I would also recommend getting dedicated books such as Drawing the Head and Hands and Figure Drawing for All It's Worth. With basic figure drawing skills, stylizing characters for manga will be much easier.

A great book for your manga art library

Beginner's Guide to Creating Manga Art is a great reference art book for the aspirant manga artist and manga aficionado in general. This book is not a how-to-draw manga, but guide full of very useful tips on drawing, inking and coloring high quality manga characters. And the manga art in this book is fantastic, bound to inspire your own manga art.
I'm very impress with the quality of this book. This book comes in a protective transparent vinyl cover, which you have to slide off to get access to the book. It also was printed in landscape, which helps to keep tips and commentaries side-by-side with the artwork shown.
The book is 208 pages long, and is organized into three chapters and a gallery:
Chapter 1: The Basics of Manga is an introduction to the world of manga. It includes a brief history of manga, and very brief guides a about manga styles, drawing faces and expressive eyes, drawing bodies and posing, and drawing clothes on characters.
Chapter 2: Designing Characters is a collection of guides on how to draw and ink a few interesting original manga characters. There are 11 character in total: The Barber, Ayaka the Zombie-Slaying Idol Singer, A Female Warrior, Kleo the Cat Girl, The School Girl, A Manga Duo, The Angel, A Forest Spirit, A Japanese Warrior Boy, A Lychee-Obsessed Girl and A Fantasy Elf. Each guide starts with an introduction and list of tools used. These guides include 5 - 16 figures, showing the art at various stages of development, using graphite pencils, brush pens, mechanical pencils, Copic liners, fountain pens, Paint Tool SAI and Photoshop.
Chapter 3: Coloring Characters builds up on the 11 characters started on the previous chapter presenting a collection of guides on how to color these. Again, each guide starts with a brief introduction and a list of tools used. These detailed guides includine 10 - 27 figures using colored inks, pencil crayons, watercolor paints, chalk pasteles, Copic markers, Faber Castell Pitt watercolor and Photoshop.
The final section is a gallery of manga art. This section consists of 10 pages loaded of manga characters. There are 3 images of manga couples, 1 image of a male manga character, 12 image of female manga characters, and two full page images (one of them a school room scenery).
In all, this book is recommended for aspiring manga artists that already know the basis of drawing manga, but is definitely one book for your manga art library.

Good, but.....

I like this book, but do not love it. I am now looking for another book to buy, for character building. The main focus of this book is coloring. There is only a few pages, at most 30, on how to actually draw the character. A few pages on the front and side view of the head, then one diagram, one for male and one for female, on how the body looks(no extra detail). Then a few pages on what the eyes should look like, on an emotional state. The rest of the book is coloring, and the artists showing how they draw their characters(at which they show you how to color them at the back, which is the coloring part. No extra detail on how to do effects....) They look really sleek and "cool", but very little deep detail.
This is no book for beginners. Very little detail on building character, or even certain ways to color or designing effects. I believe you should have a basic understanding of manga and drawing/coloring, which the coloring is mainly on the computer(or digital). Hope my review helped.
Also, if anyone can give me some suggestions on a book to get for designing/sketching/drawing manga characters, please let me know. (if the characters or tutorial characters look like these, that would be even better!)
