Another great trilogy!

Ms. Owen's is hands down one of my favorite authors. I have recently discovered her by reading one of her free books and now have read every book that she has out. Each one is so good.

This trilogy is funnier than her other trilogies. I caught myself laughing and giggling throughout the book. There are some really funny teasing and one liners. There are some really great supporting characters in this book as well.

Great book, can't wait for the final book to be released.

I really enjoyed the second book more then the first. Love the way the girls take part in the shooting,knife throwing and fighting. The story just keeps getting better. Can't wait until the next book. Hurry up and release it. Lol.

From zero to sound in no time

This book couldn't be more timely: I have started to play with Pd (Pure Data) recently and was wondering whether I could transfer my knowledge of Pd to other environments, such as my Android-powered smartphone. Written by the creator of the fantastic libpd library, this is the definitive introduction. For me it served not only as a guide to Pd on Android but also as a basic tutorial for development in Android (the book also includes a very short primer for Pd for beginners). Before this book I had not created any Android app at all and with the help of the book I found myself compiling and running sample music and sound apps on my Android phone in a few hours. What else can one ask for? More Pd and libpd knowledge would definitely not hurt but it would probably book to at least 300 - 400 pages. Besides, there are excellent and freely available resources for designing sound systems using Pd, and the book provides pointers to them.

In other words, if you want to build Pd powered applications using libpd for iPhone, iPad or Android phones and tablets, and are in need of a very quick guide to get you up to speed, then look no further. But also keep in mind that Pd system is a very sophisticated sound processing environment which requires dedication to master all of its aspects and details. Nevertheless, once you interactively design your sound application on the desktop, this book includes the necessary material to port your application to other devices. And for the impatient hackers out there, it also includes detailed explanations of RjDj (iOS) and ScenePlayer (Android) systems which help you run your Pd patches on respective devices without writing a single line of Objective C or Java code.

Good resource for libpd

Making musical apps by Peter Brinkmann provides audio developers with the knowledge to use Pure Data (Pd) to develop an interactive audio engine. The books uses libpd to embedded the widely popular audio engine, Pd, into iOS and Andriod apps. Using Pd in your apps allow you to create more interactive audio and employ the use of synthesis instead of using samples.

The book covers all fronts including getting you started with Pd. The tutorial gets you through basic concepts of visual programming in Pd and getting sound but that only scratches the surface of Pd. Users that are new to Pd would need to supplement their learning with another resource. The book later explains the integration of your Pd patch with the app through the use of libpd. However, it is expected that the reader is already capable of programming for iOS or Andriod. I would consider this book a bridge for readers who are already developing for iOS or Andriod and who are able to work with Pd. Nevertheless, for anyone who is interested in using Pd in their apps, this is the book to have.

An ideal introduction

The book was pitched at the right level for my knowledge and skills. I have written a couple of native Android apps, and have toyed with Pd in the past. The book clearly explains the context, history and potential of the library, then runs through some very clear examples to get a working app together. The tutorial format for putting together the example app is really clear and painless. Would have given 5 stars if there was another chapter going into further examples in more depth.

JavaScript reloaded

Being a Java Swing developer for many years, I was never a fan of JavaScript. There were no mature tools and frameworks a few years ago. Straight DOM programming was just error-prone and difficult to debug. Over the last few years, JavaScript has come back with a big bang, thanks to a lot of companies, among them, Google. This book is for people, like me, who gave up on JavaScript years ago because of a poor model but need to know new frameworks that help in writing concise, readable code, and also help design scalable and robust architecture, not to mention, using JavaScript with a large team that could be geographically spread out.

Frankly, this book won't teach you the basics of JavaScript. There are plenty of other books for that and the author mentions this up front. However, in my opinionion, the author does a great job of teaching how to use the simplified and concise form of JavaScript, sticking to OO way of doing it. He starts with MVC (and who doesn't love MVC!), events, models, data, controller, state, view, and templating. The examples are mostly in JQuery which is also my framework of choice for JavaScript development.

No real-time discussion of JavaScript is complete without the mention of WebSockets, Node.js, and Socket.IO. The author does a great job of explaining this in chapter 8. He also provides an example of how to make your applications look faster (perceived speed) as compared to actual speed. The later chapters focus on testing and debugging, deploying, and an overview of the Spine, Backbone, and JavaScriptMVC libraries. Appendix at the end of the book provide a JQuery primer and a reference to CSS extensions and CSS3.

I cannot say that after reading this book, I have fallen in love with JavaScript since I am a big fan of Adobe Flex. However, I have many JavaScript projects under my belt and this book is a valuable resource for me to ensure that my apps scale well and that my offshore resources use the sandbox model to avoid tight coupling and ensure reusability.

You just might learn a boatload of stuff...

I think this can be an incredibly helpful book if you hit it at the right stage in your JavaScript (JS) learning process, even if you don't need to implement full-blown MVC for your immediate needs. I can honestly say that I've learned as much, and probably more, from working through the core of this book (Chapters 1-5) than I have from any other single JS book.

But, you need to be at the right stage... which is basically, when you can follow the book, although it may take a bit of effort. If you're already a ninja, you probably don't need to read the book at all, unless you simply want to be exposed to another POV. And, for a lot of non-ninja, the book will be too advanced. Luckily, O'Reilly put the entire first chapter on-line so you can judge for yourself.

Chapter 1 is no namby pampy intro. In the chapter McCaw defines a constructor function used to create constructor functions that emulate classes in languages which support classes natively. He also includes a useful discussion of how the 'this' context switches in JS and how to control it with bind or by defining a jQ-like proxy method. Later design patterns have some similarity to what he does in chapter 1 (using Object.create instead of constructors), so if you can follow this chapter, you're probably ready to take on the book.

I'd describe the audience for the book as developers who've already built an app, or at least added fairly complex functionality to web pages and are comfortable with prototypal inheritance, closures on inner functions, call/apply and who know basic DOM scripting. Additionally, you may well have a sneaking suspicion that although your apps work, they're not designed as cleanly as they could be. If you're part of that audience, you just might learn a boatload of stuff as you follow McCaw's thinking as to how to design large-scale JS apps. Despite the sub-title, you don't really need to know jQuery (jQ) all that well, as long as you're somewhat familiar with it and the way it chains methods. One of the nice things about the book is that McCaw often gives you the plain old JavaScript (PoJS) for some of the basic methods he adds to his template objects and constructors, before switching to jQ for convenience. For example, after chapter 1 you'll have the PoJS equivalents for jQ's extend and proxy so it's easy to create a PoJS version for say the Model object or the Controller object which he defines later. For other jQ methods used in examples, you should be at the level where you can figure out what jQ is doing and write the equivalent in PoJS if that's what you want to do.

Some of the other reviews have touched on a few negatives, but to my mind they're not enough to downgrade the book. Occasionaly, the discussion seems to jump over an explanatory detail, but if you make a lab page that links to the book errata page and download the code for the examples, you should be able to fill in any gaps. I found the first five chapters fascinating, and chapters 6-13 useful and concise roll ups on various topics like dependency management, debugging and various libraries. In addition there are appendices that do a quick survey of jQuery and CSS3.

The problem with learning JS in the contemporary landscape is that what used to be advanced, even esoteric, technique is commonplace now. If you go back and look at the Sitepoint JavaScript Anthology or PPK on JavaScript which came out ~2005/2006, you'll see relatively straightforward and easy to understand JS and DOM scripting. But, as Crockford noted "JavaScript is Lisp in C's clothing" and if you don't have a theoretical background in functional programming, it can be very challenging to follow the ninja use of function scope to create modules, encapsulate values in closures etc... Wrapping your head around the core of this book can really deepen your understanding of JS.

Good but un-necessarily hard going

Great idea for a book and much of the content is first class. Make sure you've read JavaScript the Good Parts and/or JavaScript Patterns and have learned the basics of JQuery before even attempting to read this book though, otherwise your going to have trouble following along with some of the content.

Unfortunately it does have some falws. In particular I found some of the descriptions of code samples were lacking, additionally many of the code samples seemed un-necessarily terse/confusing. Normally I wouldn't massively care about this sort of thing in code samples, however when coupled with the use of some of JavaScripts odder features they make the code a bit painful to read. Thats not to say you can't understand whats going on, you just have to put in more effort than you might expect and you probably won't find it as enjoyable as you'd like.

These issues are the main reason I've given the book just three stars. I'm hoping the issues will be addressed in any future second edition, at which time this will definitely be a five star book.

One other thing, chapter 11 is on Spine.js. This chapter is now a little out-of-date, for example Spine now uses CoffeeScripts classes, so you may want to use the excellent online documentation for spine.js instead.

A Superb Book On Analytical Dynamics

This is an excellent book on the fundamentals of Analytical Dynamics. It deals with the essentials of Lagrangian mechanics in an altogether new and imaginative way. It is a 'must read' for beginners as well as experts, for it contains a wealth of new information and new results. Though short (only about 250 pages), it sparkles with brilliance and promises to become, like Goldstein's book, a classic text in the field.
Far from a dry re-hash of material taken from other books, as is commonly the case with books on this subject, this book takes a truly novel and exciting tack--just like its title says. It explains the basic concepts in Analytical Dynamics in a new, thorough, yet simple, way. The material is extremely well-crafted and carefully presented in a systematic manner; the power of the new results provided by the authors is astounding, as illustrated by the numerous examples in the book.
The authors show their mastery of the subject by leading the reader on, with unusual clarity, into deeper and deeper realms of the subject with each successive chapter. The book provides amazing insights into Lagrangian mechanics, constrained motion, multi-body dynamics, Gauss's Principle, etc., along with an incredible economy of words, and a stunning level of simplicity.
The material in especially the later chapters that deals with elimination methods and the Gibbs-Appell equations, to the best of my knowledge, is all new. The problems at the end of each chapter appear to be carefully chosen and instructive for students. Each chaper ends with a section entitled "For Further Reading," that I found interesting. The format of the book is such that it could be easily used as a text for a course on the subject.
The authors have written a truly outstanding text that can be read and enjoyed by an advanced university junior or senior, a graduate student, or an expert in the field. It is one of the VERY FEW technical books that I have come across that I just could not put down, once I started reading it.
I heartily recommend this book to the science and engineering community.

I came across this book surfing the web. The customer reviews seemed excellent, so I bought it. Since I don't like long book reviews, I'll be brief.
My Opinion: The book is EXCELLENT! The authors know analytical dynamics inside-out, and that is why their explanations are so simple and aesthetic.
My Research: I was curious to know how this book came about . . . it seemed to come like out of the blue. So I did some research. The authors are active researchers. They have published numerous papers in the most prestigious journals over the last 2 decades, and they continue to present new research on the fundamentals of analytical dynamics. That explained a lot to me! Especially the high quality of the book.
Recommendation: Read it, and enjoy! Read it again, and enjoy some more!
About other reviews: I agree with the previous reviewers . . . this is a book that should be on the bookshelf of everyone interested in mechanics, students and researchers alike.

A New Classic in Analytical Dynamics

This short book is written with a style and clarity that can only come from individuals who understand analytical dynamics both deeply and well. The book is in many ways utterly brilliant. The authors take on perhaps the most difficult problem in analytical dynamics-- the problem of constrained motion that has been worked on by such individuals as H. Poincare-- and they provide a solution that is new, elegant, simple, and marvelous.
Though it starts from simple beginnings, from the very first chapter one realizes that this is a book of a very different caliber from those currently available on the subject. Almost imperceptibly, the authors lead the reader across a vast landscape in analytical dynamics. The topics are covered incrementally, and in excellent pedagogical order. Problems at the end of each chapter are well thought out. The authors' style is engaging, their explanations are remarkably clear, and their results simply amazing. The physical insights they provide are beautiful, novel, and new.
I consider this book to be a truly original contribution to the field of analytical dynamics; for, there is little in it that I have ever come across in any other book on the subject. Not only is its approach new, as its title says, but most of the results developed in it are also new-- something I would never have imagined finding in a mature field like mechanics.
There is little doubt that this book will have a lasting impact on the field of analytical dynamics. In eight short chapters it says more about the fundamentals of analytical dynamics than most other books that are three times its size. I believe that its uniqueness may well, in time, make it a classic.
I very strongly recommend this book to all students and researchers in the field. I plan to use it as a text for the course that I teach on the subject.
