About the Author
Stephen Haag is the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and Director of the MBA program in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Prior to being Associate Dean, Stephen served as Chair of the Department of Information Technology and Electronic Commerce in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Stephen holds a B.B.A. and M.B.A. from West Texas State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington. Stephen has been teaching in the classroom since 1982 and publishing books since 1984.

Stephen is the coauthor of numerous books including "Interactions: Teaching English as a Second Language" (with his mother and father), "Information Technology: Tomorrow's Advantage Today" (with Peter Keen), "Excelling in Finance," and more than 40 books within the "I-Series." He has also written numberous articles appearing in such journals as Communications of the ACM, Soio-Economic Planning Siences, the International Journal of Systems Science, Managerial and Decision Economics, Applied Economics, and the Australian Journal of Management.

Maeve Cummings is a professor of Information Systems at Pittsburg State University. She holds a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science and an M.B.A. from Pittsburg State, and a Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Texas at Arlington. She has published in various journals including the Journal of Global Information Management and the Journal of Computer Information Systems. She serves on various editorial boards and is a coauthor of two concepts books within the I-Series. Maeve has been teaching for 20 years and lives in Pittsburg, Kansas, with her husband, Slim.

Good Book, Kindle version flawed

I think the textbook CONTENT is great, informative and interesting. I like it.

But..

This is my first college textbook in a Digital format. I purchased the kindle version because of the dramatic price difference between e-book and hardcover.I am stuck with this e-book as the class is well underway.

I am using the Kindle for PC and the Kindle for Android version reader software.

While I think it is great to have a copy of the text on both my PC and my Android device for reading, the lack of actual page numbers makes it impossible to find instructor assignments and quote the text for my written assignments.

The page numbers on this particular version are not useful. I show 21245 pages.

There are no references to actual page numbers.(cannot search by page)

The content appears to be re-arranged from the printed version. Some of the learning modules are placed in the back of the text instead of after the chapter in which they refer.

The diagrams and images are not zoom-able on the PC version.

I am pretty sure this problem rests with both McGraw-Hill publisher and Amazon for allowing something like actual page numbers to be ignored.

I am excited that e-textbooks are beginning to show up as a way to save money and save my back from carrying 30lbs of books; however, they need to improve this format to be truly useful for something important like an expensive education.

I have used (and continue to use) this text for a college class on MIS. It's among the best textbooks I've ever come across. The book is filled with real world stories of real companies and how they have improved their competitive positions using IT. It also contains numerous 15-25 minute group activities and "On Your Own" assignments. Each chapter ends with a list of Key Terms, as well as several short answer and discussion questions.
Finally, and what I like most about the text, is a section on "Real HOT Group Projects." Many of these require creation of database reports or spread sheet pivot tables. So, you may find yourself diverting some time to teaching spreadsheet and database skills. But how can you teach the application of technology to managing and creating information, without actually using technology to do just that?

These concepts are so vague and open to interpretation - the book does a good job of explaining them. It doesn't try to pigeon hole you into the authors way of thinking about these (which is most often the case). Good reading for the aspiring manager or the experienced manager.

An excellent book if you're just getting started with essential oils

This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it! If you're just starting out with essential oils I recommend this book. This book talks about some of the most common essential oils and also some of the most complex essential oils. She also lists all the safety information for each essential oil as well which is a huge Plus!! She talks about the origin of each essential oil, the plant parts that are used, dilutions and what other essential oils might mix well with others essential oils. Everything about this book is exceptional!! There's also some history on essential oils.

Great Book!

I was actually surprised by two things:
1. The fact that I have a now vast and still growing library of books on Aromatherapy and Essential Oils (Including from authors like Worwood, Cooksley, Schnaubelt and Tisserand) yet I now find myself reaching for this one more than some of these other authors.
2. The negative reviews of others.

I guess my expectations were different. While it is an Encyclopeia which should make it a valuble reference source, I feel it does what an Encyclopeia should do and what is standard for that type of reference - that is it covers a lot of information on a broad range of items that you can look up (in this case essential oils) and does a good job giving you the necessary background and basic information that you would need to get a good understanding of what it is you looked up. (Not be a master at that topic because that would result in something far more extensive and a very weighty book when covering so many oils.) Despite being concise and to the point Lawless still manages to give you a snap shot of each oil with information on 13 topics for each of the over 165 oils listed (one review said over 190 but not sure where that number came from, I counted something around 168, still quite a list!).

The only thing I will say is that she is along the lines of Cooksley and Worwood where I sometimes feel like they are overly cautious. I believe in being responsible and informed with use but I prefer authors like Schnaubelt that don't discount an oil due to one study that was done once by someone and recorded and therefore it is now considered toxic, without looking at how the study was done and what factors were involved, if constituents of the oil were isolated, etc. However, if you are new to EOs than it is best to error on the more restricted use just to be safe.

I will not list the chapters in the introductory Part 1 as another reviewer already covered. But in Part 2 "The Oils", each oil is listed with its botanical name and then given the following information in the following order:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION (Of the plant)
DISTRIBUTION

This is what the majority of the book IS (just like an encyclopedia would be) and I believe it does a good job doing what it is designed to do. The fact that it is only missing about 3 of my favorite oils (probably because they are newer, i.e. Rhododendron, Palo Santo, etc.) and lists so many others, it truely is a nicely organized and very handy and useful reference.
It is easy to find the information you need and quickly. Despite the lack of "color" complaints by other reviewers, I still found it one of the more attractive aromatherapy books. It is well laid out, in nice print, and has some lovely black and white illustrations. The book is actualy more attractive than some of the other more well know ones and I think I reach for it more often now because I don't have to wade through many reciepes and a ton of other chapters to get to hunt for the part that just profiles the oils themselves. (Other information is good, all of the recepies, uses on animals, household cleaners, etc. just not what I am looking for when I am grabbing an encyclopedia to give the basic background and profile.)

ALSO - The Therapeutic Index in the back along with the General Glossary that defines the medical terms addressed in the book (and address in several others, but are not defined in a lot of other books) for those who do not have a health science background proves very useful. There is also a rather extensive Botanical Classification and a good Botantical Index in the very back.

So I will be getting the newer Illustraded version eventually but not out of dissapointment for this one, if anything because I was so impressed with the layout and information that exceeded my expectaions of this author that I took a chance on. (Getting a good used copy of this edition will allow those pinching pennies to add a great reference book to their Aromatherapy library.)

A Goldmine of Essential Oil Knowledge

This book is perfect for the Essential Oil dabbler and the professional alike! Julia Lawless explains the history of aromatherapy, the medicinal benefit behind it and, most importantly, she talks about the dangers/times to avoid an oil as well as it's benefits. She approaches her use of oils purely from a topical or inhalant standpoint (she doesn't endorse internal usage), but the knowledge she imparts is beneficial to anyone interested in Aromatherapy. She spends anywhere from a page to several pages dissecting each oil and their benefits, historical uses, cautions, and other oils that it goes well with for different purposes.

After doing a lot of research on different EO resource books on the market, I am quite pleased with my decision to purchase this one based on the depth of her coverage, the broad spectrum of information she includes, and her exhaustive technical research that went into making this EO Encyclopedia a necessity for every EO user!

Baricco eliminates the appearances of the gods, adds an ending chapter (borrowed from the Odyssey) that recounts the famous incident of the wooden horse and the sack of Troy and—an ingenious touch—tells the story from the first-person viewpoint of various participants: Odysseus, Thersites, Nestor, Achilles. The famed physicality and violence of the poem are here ("the bronze tip... cut the tongue cleanly at the base, came out through the neck"), and Baricco doesn't sentimentalize the story—easy to do, especially with Helen. The larger plot remains: Agamemnon insults Achilles, the best warrior on the Achaean (Greek) side, who then refuses to further serve, which allows the Trojans to rally under their greatest warrior, King Priam's son, Hector. Achilles' best friend, Patroclus, receives Achilles' permission to help the Greeks, but is killed in battle. Achilles returns to the battlefield, succeeds in isolating Hector underneath the walls of Troy and strikes him down. Finally, Priam goes to Achilles' tent and begs for the body of his son, and Achilles grants his return. Medieval versions of the Iliad story conceived it in chivalrous terms, but Baricco conveys the real story, an epic of harsh dealings, small treacheries and large vanities. He adds only a few modern reflections to the character's thoughts: old Nestor, for instance, plays with the paradox that the young have an "old idea of war," which entails honor, beauty and glory, while the old take up new ways to fight simply in order to win. In an afterword, Baricco states that "this is not an ordinary time to read the Iliad," and his book is more than a pasteurized version of a great poem. It is a variation, and a very moving one, on timeless Homeric themes. (Aug.)

This retelling of the Homeric epic is defiantly modern: it excises the gods and supplants the omniscient narrator with alternating voices, as one character after another—hero and bit player alike—is granted the opportunity to speak and shed light on the decade-long siege of Troy. Alluding to our current time of "battles, assassinations, bombings," Baricco's text lingers on the futility of an unending war, and casts the arrival of the thousand-odd ships as an invasion by an overwhelmingly superior force, met by young recruits throwing stones. Still, in substance, his version cleaves closely to the original. As in Homer, the lesser-known foot soldiers come to life only at the moment of their death, when they enter history; each killing is singular, and almost lovingly detailed—a sword pierces a skull and a man falls, "teeth biting the cold bronze."

Baricco, the author of, among other highly regarded works, the shimmering novel ilk (1997), submits his own version, condensed from the original, of the classic epic poem he Iliad, and the result is a beguiling mixture of drama and prose poem. As he explains in the introduction, "I tried never to summarize but, rather, to create episodes that were more succinct while still made of portions of the original text. Thus the bricks are Homeric but the mortar and the resulting edifice are transformed." Updating a classic can be tricky, but Baricco's sensitive hands have wrought a dynamic, beautifully styled series of first-person testimonies from the major figures in the long-lasting Greek assault on the Asia Minor city of Troy, where the fair and absconded Helen lies in the arms of the godly handsome Paris. Familiarity with the original text is not essential for successfully experiencing this elegant depiction of warfare--yes, purely it is the story of war, with all the destruction concomitant to that situation; however, the characters achieve a remarkable individuality. Entertaining and educational if read with Italian version

Entertaining on its own it makes a wonderful text to practice your Italian if you read it along with the Italian version much of which is available on Google books, look for:

I am an intermediate student of Italian. I find the translation from Italian to English to be quite literal and the Italian is straightforward so I recommend the two as a parallel reader. The fact that the original Homeric story is well known and well told helps.

New look at an old tale

If you think you know all about the Iliad, Baricco's book will delight you with the insights it brings to this oft told tale. A retelling of the masterpiece from the perspective of the participants, this delightful volume is another great example of Baricco's imagination.

a truly bold reimagining: approach with an open mind

I am as close to a Homer purist as you will find: BA and MA in classics. Of course this book is no substitute for Homer's original: that narrative defined all western standards for storytelling. But I must give Baricco the highest marks for crystalizing and presenting (quite powerfully) the elements of the Iliad that are still relevant to human circumstances. We no longer believe that a pantheon of gods intimately involve themselves in the lives of a few heroic figures. It is therefore the job of the modern interpreter to find the purely human motivations that haven't changed over the millennia. This Baricco has done superbly. The characters do not all sound alike, as the other reviewer claims: that's just wrong. As one who has studied Homer line by line in the original, I have as much reason in theory to be bored or unimpressed by this project. But I am not. It made me think about the original in a new way, and that's no small feat.
