A gem for physics students

Writing an error analysis book for physics students is a tricky task in my opinion. Physics students just need to know how to calculate. They do not need proofs, but they need to understand the methodologies well enough such that they know which technique to apply. I think this book really hits the sweet spot. Proofs are kept to a minimal, but the explanations are full of insight. Another thing that I like is that the examples are closely related to typical physics experiments, so physics students can easily relate the analysis to their experiments.

The book is divided into two parts. The first few chapters in Part 1 is somewhat elementary. Everything comes together when it comes to the chapter on normal distribution. I guess some people might find the progress of the book a bit slow. On the other hand, I think that even a high school physics student can grab the book and learn how to do error analysis for their experiments by reading the first few chapters. I think that it is a great arrangement as error analysis should be introduced early in physics education. Error analysis is very often an overlooked topic. This book is a gem for physics students.

A topic of greatest importance

The contents of this book provide beyond doubt the most important topics an applied mathematician, physicist, engineer, or anyone working in any quantitative discipline can be exposed to. It is also fair to bet that anyone working in these disciplines has encountered these topics early on in their professional careers, as they are usually the first ones presented to incoming freshman in beginning engineering and physics laboratories. When performing elementary laboratory experiments, beginning students find out right away that their results do not match the perfections of textbook equations. Experimental apparatus is never infinitely precise and frequently mistakes are made in experimental work repeatedly and unknowingly by the experimentalist, engineer, or scientist. Errors and uncertainties accompany any experiment that is conducted in the real world, and how to deal with them is the subject of error analysis, which is now called "uncertainty quantification" in more modern parlance. This subject is vast and in many ways very controversial, and modern technological developments have instigated a lot of research in this area.

This excellent book gives an elementary overview of the techniques of error analysis that touches on topics such as uncertainty, propagation of errors, and systematic error. Readers will only require a rudimentary background in mathematics and statistics in order to read and study it. Numerous "quick" practice exercises are embedded in the main text, giving readers immediate challenges to their understanding as they read the text. Problem sets accompany each chapter, and they reflect the kinds of problems that one would encounter in real practice.

Error analysis (uncertainty quantification) is certainly the most important activity behind any kind of scientific research and mathematical and simulation modeling. The comparison of results of models to empirical data cannot be done meaningfully without the tools outlined in this book and others. It is therefore very disheartening to find, as the reviewer has on numerous occasions, that any cognizance of errors or uncertainties in modeling and experimental efforts is completely absent. In some contexts, such as research on medical devices and national defense, this omission can be extremely dangerous and actually cause loss of life. The origins of why the practice of error analysis has been forgotten or omitted is unknown, but those individuals who do would gain considerably by a careful study of this book. It would be the most important refresher course that they could take in their professional careers.

I think it's the best and more clear introductory book to error analysis...

An excellent introduction to error analysis: it's well written, all the ideas are explained at an intuitive level and with an easy-to-understand language; furthermore no mathematical prerequisites of high level are requested. The level is appropriate to undergraduate student, but it remains a very good book for consultation at higher level, too.

Very very good binding and hardcover: it's durable and solid, with an excellent value for money. Remark that on the internal part of the hard cover (the two first and the two last pages) it's present a short summary on the most essential formulas, which are very useful for speedy consultation.

Gold Standard w/ Limitations of Edited Volume

This seems to be the gold standard in the field, and deservedly so. I've seen it selected as the book for almost every intro Informatics course I've been exposed to. I've read all but three chapters (13,15, and 21) of it and found that in general the chapters are quite strong. Because it is an edited volume the quality and style of the chapters are mixed. The chapters are, without exception, meticulously sourced making the references section a real gem. The questions at the end of the chapter wouldn't be close to adequate for a self study book (I'd say they are only slightly more than perfunctory).

I think this book has two limitations:
- Lacks any substantive cross chapter continuity (on the upside this means it can really be read in almost any order).
- The chapter length to depth ratio is unfavorable. At an average of 40ish pages the chapters should really be able to get into real technical depth; instead, it seems to gloss over the technical details with repetitions of "gee whiz" platitudes.

I think this book has one annoyance:
- A lot of the contents (particularly in the first few chapters of the book) have an "in the future we'll all drive flying cars" feel that makes them more dated than the publication date would suggest.

Bottom line: best-of-breed, recommended.

Excellent overview

This second edition of Shortliffe's textbook is an excellent overview of the field. Although I used it as a course text, it is extremely readable. The chapters are not overly technical, as befits an introductory text, but by no means is this a "Dummmies" book either.
There are now a variety of introductory/overview books on medical informatics. However, of the ones I've read (including van Bemmel's Handbook of Medical Informatics and Coiera's Guide to Medical Informatics), this book is by far the best.

Strong on subject matter

I didn't think I'd like this book very much when I found I had to order it for a class I'm taking (Introduction to Medical Informatics). It's fairly dense, but I found that it is dense in a good kind of way. Each chapter reads like a good overview of the subject. As I've progressed through the book I find very little lacking. It offers nearly complete information on every aspect of the subject matter. Someone who didn't know something ever existed before reading this book could come away with a good grasp of the subject and have references to follow up for a more complete view. It doesn't read like literature, but thankfully it is broken up into small easily digestible sections.

There are probably other texts that are easier to read because of style. This one is very strong on content and won't leave gaps. It might have you asking the right kind of question when finished, but that is the whole point, isn't it?

The book includes a CD witch is extremely helpful to make documents for planning how to deal with behaviors and create signs, tickets, and posters for classroom. I've been teaching for 20+ years, and this is one of the few items I've seen in recent years that actually made me sit up and take notice. The advice and techniques are organized and very doable. The only thing to keep in mind is that this is not a "quick" fix. The program may take 3-5 years to truly run smoothly school-wide.

Helpful for new teachers

This is a very structured program but it is very good for teachers still needing help designing their management system. It has some great advice, but I wish I had read the product description more closely because mine did not come with a CD as I had hoped. Since this was a seller issue I did not include it in my rating because I thought the book itself was great.

A look into a legend's life

She was the husky-voiced rising star, and he was the grizzled veteran. While "Laurel Bacall: By Myself" covers much of Bacall's life, the centerpiece of it is her marriage to Humphrey Bogart. Here Bacall reflects back on her eventful life, relationship and how things are for her since.
Teenage Betty Bacall first saw Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca," and decidedly did not think he was sexy. But she started to think otherwise when she became a rising model-turned-starlet in Hollywood, a nervous budding It-girl. She met and befriended Bogart, then trapped in an alcoholic, abusive marriage with a woman he didn't love.
Their friendship quickly become a hidden love affair, despite their age difference. After his divorce from third wife Mayo, the two of them married and had two children, until Bogart's untimely death of cancer. Bacall chronicles her sorrow at his loss, and her life "by herself."
Bacall does a good job with this biography. She writes her own life story as a smart but insecure woman who isn't afraid to reveal her embarrassments and flaws. She comes across as a lot stronger than she believes herself to be, though she falters quite a bit in middle-age. At times Bacall may frustrate readers by being somewhat clueless about her own relationships and marriages (drinking and marital discord).
"By Myself" is not exceptionally written, however; the style is quite plain and lacks quite a few details. Bacall compensates somewhat with her dry, self-deprecating wit and forthrightness. There's a bit of lingering displeasure with some people like her ex-husband and Bogart's ex-wife Mayo, but Bacall keeps any negative feelings strictly reined in, and her discreet.
Don't expect lots of dirt and dish -- Bacall clearly isn't interested in talking about glitz and tawdry little affairs people around her were having. Nor does she name-drop a lot -- after all, why would Lauren Bacall have to? Rather she's interested in the solid, serious romance she and Bogie had, and the day-to-day life of acting, and her family with her adoring, very supportive mother and her children.
This is "old Hollywood" as people like to remember it. For fans of real love and romance, not to mention old Hollywood, this is a must-read.

A Personal Favorite

Neither judgmental nor defensive, "Lauren Bacall, By Myself" is the best autobiography I have ever read. Extensive and quite well-written, it covers so much ground that fans of the old Hollywood and Broadway days will doubtless love this book whether they particularly like Bacall herself or not. I liked the fact that she did not divide the book into chapters; life is not that way and reading this bio is just like stepping into Bacall's life and seeing it with your own eyes. Cleverly titled (am I the only one who senses a double meaning) and full of life, "Lauren Bacall, By Myself" is a literary achievement for Bacall and a great pleasure for any reader.

Triumph and Tragedy.. A Life revealed.

I have never considered myself a Lauren Bacall fan but having recently rewatched To Have And Have Not, her film debut, I became intrigued about her and Bogart so I picked up this book after reading such positive reviews here at Amazon.

Well, was I surprised. First this is a very well written autobiography that demonstrates a keen intelligence and a reflectiveness on the past that is truly admirable. It is also incredibly honest and not just a recitation of a Hollywood star's accomplishments.

From Bacall's youth in New York where she tried desperately to find a place in the theater to her ultimate return to the stage as a star after spending years in California as Mrs. Bogart and raising a family, every stage of her life is well examined.

Bogart emerges as a truly good guy, not perfect but clearly they were a great match despite the obvious age difference.

Some of the episodes in her life with Bogart have the added quality of capturing a period in Hollywood and the film industry that is long gone. Bacall isn't and doesn't need to be a name dropper but so many famous characters pop in and out of her story that it is a virtual who's who of 1940's Hollywood.

What I initally picked up as a casual read turned into something much deeper. Lauren Bacall , who I knew little about before reading this is a woman who I came to really like as a result of this book.

Well written and well worth checking out for filmfans, fans of Bogart or anyone interested in acting and theater and the celebrity life of the 40's and 50's.

Satisfactory book for programming learning.

I wrote a very unhappy review, as I was beginning this class. With no programming background, I had a very difficult time following the material. However, as I have become more comfortable with the material, I'm becoming a lot more happy with the book.

The font is very small (and I have very good eyes). The color/texture of the paper combined with the color of the ink, and size and font of the letters, makes it very uncomfortable to read. Also, the binding makes it very difficult to keep the book open if you don't hold it with both hands, and it's exceedingly difficult to hold it with two hands while typing complicated strings of programming code into a computer. Should have been spiral binding, or something. I hope the publisher improves these in future editions.

Highly recommended to all my students and a valuable summary of the state-of-the art in C# programming.

This book continues the Wrox tradition of books, that teach programming in a step-by-step manner, which started in 2002. It is written in easy-to-understand English, which makes it ideal for my students. It has a very interesting table-of-content, that fo example shows cloud programming before ADO.NET. Entity Framework, for which there is no up-to-date book at the moment, is also covered. Obviously the books was written beginning with a blank page and C# 6 from the start which makes it outstanding compared to books that are refurbished every 2nd year. And it is slim compared to many other books. I read only a few chapters, so it's to early to know about errata issues.

Survival in our times

Despite its title, retired Navy SEAL Clint Emerson's "100 Deadly Skills: The SEAL Operative's Guide to Eluding Pursuers, Evading Capture, and Surviving Any Dangerous Situations", is as often applicable to civilian life as to clandestine operations. Tips include skills on avoiding such annoyances as car thefts, carjackings, home invasions and burglaries. Hint: never leave your keys in your car. We all know this, but when the advice comes from somebody who can also tell you how to steal a car, maybe it will sink in. And that valet key some car dealers put in your owner’s manual? Repeat after me: it’s a key. Put it in a safe place that’s not in your car.

For travelers, Emerson offers such tips on hotel safety as asking for a room midway between elevators and stairways. And why you probably don’t want a room on the ground floor.

Every skill (usually discussed on a single page) is broken down into its critical parts, has a bottom line takeaway, and is illustrated with clear line drawings by storyboard artist Ted Slampyak.

I had hoped not to have to deal with the discussion of active shooters (Skill #073) or other armed aggressors, but recent events in Paris and San Bernardino, California, make these pertinent. Those of us who aren’t hero wannabes will be relieved to know that people finding themselves in such dire situations can often be saved by following Emerson’s commonsense tips that don’t require the response of blazing guns, at least not from civilians.

In fact, his first recommendation for evading danger is to run. His second recommendation is to hide. Fighting is always the last option.

When running, remember it’s harder for a shooter to hit a moving target, so run in a zigzag pattern or from cover to cover. If running is not an option, hide out of the shooter’s view, silence digital devices and follow Emerson’s additional suggestions for preferred cover objects and improvised ballistic armor.

Fighting unarmed against a gunman? Emerson says it can be done successfully, but I’ll leave readers to check out his tips for themselves.

Aside from practical skills, the book has enough juicy material on SEAL and other covert operations tactics to make it a must-read for writers in the mystery and thriller genres. Everybody’s favorite groaner is the rectal concealment device. Consider making your own to give to the naughtiest acquaintances on your naughty list. Or if they continue to annoy you, see Emerson’s discussion of body disposal, including the tips for burial at sea which, I assume, were followed in disposing of the body of terror mastermind Osama bin Laden.

A suprisingly good, practical guide

I was interested in this book as a resource for writing. It's great for anyone wanting to describe the details of escaping from Zip-ties, for instance. It had a MacGyver feel to it somehow, kind of matter-of-fact, no worries. If you find yourself locked in the trunk of a car, don't panic, do one of these three things. Duct taped wrists and ankles, here is what you do....

Although I bought it as a writer's resource, I found myself adopting some of the tips for myself. Yep, got that bobby pin tucked in my belt. The way the world is going these days, we should all be prepared for anything.

One thing that the author did not address, at least not that I remember, was the increasing difficulty of finding some of these tools because everything is being made of plastic these days. Wire hangars? Even the cleaners doesn't use them any more.

Become a Sheepdog …

I saw the author, ret. SEAL Clint Emerson, discussing this book on television and after seeing him elaborate on a sample of “skills”, I immediately ordered it. 100 DEADLY SKILLS offers a wealth of common-sense techniques used by elite military operators that can be applied for civilian use (for the most part). I found the book’s value centered more on making the reader smarter, more aware and more prepared; not as a tool to instigate trouble.

I like (“American Sniper”) Chris Kyle’s simplified view of people: there are the sheep, the wolves that prey on the sheep and those who take on the wolf to protect the sheep … the sheepdogs. 100 DEADLY SKILLS’ purpose is to provide readers with enough necessary information to become sheepdogs. The method is simple, provide the sheep (easy victim) with the same tools and know-how wolves (criminals, terrorists, etc.) use on their prey … fighting fire with fire.

The simple presentation of the material is particularly effective. There are no long, laborious chapters of text to sift through. Emerson generally uses a two-page technique for each of the 100 skills he presents. The left page provides a brief, easily understood explanation of a particular skill and the right page offers a simple step-by-step graphic presentation of the skill. This one-two punch makes a solid impression that is easy to remember. The range of skills covered in the book is diverse and some of the skills are a little extreme (hopefully, most readers will wonder why they need to know how to dispose of a body). But, again, I sense that the purpose of this information is less about actually USING each and every skill as it is making people understand that most of the skills presented are already commonly used by those with ill-intent … the power is knowing what they know and finding ways to avoid or effectively counter their methods. Emerson calls the understanding/use of these skills characteristic of the “Violent Nomad” (or, in Chris Kyle’s world, the tools of the sheepdog).

So, for those of us who don’t really have a need for knowing how to: Dispose of a Body (skill #86), Steal a Plane (#26) or Cross Enemy Boarders by Sea, Air and Land (#11, #12 and #13) … what does reading such a book offer? Quite a lot, actually. First of all, I read this book while on a vacation and it provided several practical tips pertaining to everyday travel: how to hide things in a room and how to discover whether or not your suitcases have been opened. Additionally, it revealed how unsecure you really are in your hotel room with instructions on how to bypass hotel room doors and unlatch door locks. The section on surveillance techniques probably won’t come in handy for most, but understanding how to detect and lose those who may be sizing you as a potential victim certainly may be useful. Educating people on personal, cultural, situational and third-party awareness (#17 Blend into Any Environment) is probably one of the most important skills presented in the book because it’s the one skill that can be employed to avoid using most of the other skills (by having the presence of mind to avoid a potentially deadly encounter). 100 DEADLY SKILLS is filled with useful instructions on weapon improvisation, defense and safety techniques that certainly could be useful in dire situations; as well as common inconveniences, like being locked out of your home (#50 Defeat a Padlock or #53 Discretely Open a Garage Door).

100 DEADLY SKILLS is a tremendous source of USEFUL information that gets readers out of their comfort zone. Most everything presented is based on common-sense and uses common household items with a little ingenuity. Some may see such a book as equivalent to “giving the fox the keys to the henhouse”, but the author asserts most all of the items discussed in the book are commonly used by criminals/terrorists; we just don’t realize it. By giving us a better understanding of the criminal-mind’s ingenuity, we are better prepared to avoid/survive a negative encounter (especially for those who travel to less-than-friendly parts of the world).
