Family Therapies: A Comprehensive Christian Appraisal, by Mark A. Yarhouse, James N. Sells

Christian therapists doing family therapy have never had a resource to help them navigate the various family therapy theories from a Christian perspective--until now. In this book Mark A. Yarhouse and James N. Sells survey the major approaches to family therapy and treat, within a Christian framework, significant psychotherapeutic issues. The wide array of issues covered includes

  • crisis and trauma
  • marital conflict
  • separation, divorce and blended families
  • individual psychopathology
  • substance abuse and addictions
  • gender, culture, economic class and race
  • sexual identity
Calling for an integrated approach of "responsible eclecticism," they conclude with a vision for Christian family therapy. A landmark work providing critical Christian engagement with existing models of family therapy, this volume was written for those studying counseling, social work, psychology or family therapy. Family Therapies will also serve as an indispensable resource for those in the mental health professions, including counselors, psychologists, family therapists, social workers and pastors.

Review
"Yarhouse and Sells have created a masterpiece work analyzing approaches to family therapies. This is going to be a new classic, matching the accomplishment of Jones and Butman's analysis of psychotherapies in their book, Modern Psychotherapies." (Everett L. Worthington Jr., professor of psychology, Virginia Commonwealth University)

"Mark Yarhouse and James Sells have written a very helpful book that is comprehensive, biblically based and well-written. I highly recommend it as an excellent text for those interested in a Christian approach to family therapy." (Siang-Yang Tan, Ph.D., professor of psychology, Fuller Theological Seminary, and senior pastor, First Evangelical Church of Glendale, California)

"In Family Therapies, Yarhouse and Sells provide an important resource for Christian scholars and therapists. The first two sections provide a thoughtful foundation and Christian critique of existing therapy models, reminiscent of what Stanton L. Jones and Richard E. Butman accomplished in their classic book, Modern Psychotherapies, but with a focus on models of family therapy. The third section, which could have been a book on its own, looks at contemporary issues in relation to a Christian perspective on family therapy. The final section casts a vision for an integrative model of family therapy. This is a significant book that will help shape the training and practice of Christian therapists." (Mark R. McMinn, Ph.D., ABPP, professor of psychology, George Fox University, an`d coauthor of Integrative Psychotherapy)

"Yarhouse and Sells have written a practical, concise, invaluable, one- of-a-kind resource that integrates biblical, theological, psychological, theoretical, clinical and practical resources in ways that help the reader look at the family and family therapy through different lenses and better understand the individual in the context of their broader family system. This book will be read and reread by a broad audience." (Gary J. Oliver, Th.M., Ph.D., professor of psychology and practical theology, John Brown University)

A Textbook You Can Read Cover to Cover
By Anthony Centore Ph.D.
Written for students, therapists, and pastors, the textbook Family Therapies is designed to provide intelligent content about psychotherapy topics, while not losing readers with less clinical inclinations. The book accomplishes this goal.

Students reading the textbook will receive an ample review of major family therapy models, while counselors will benefit from the more nuanced clinical insights of the authors, such as the "respect commitment," a concept that can be implemented during times of family stress or crisis. According to the authors:

The respect commitment is a pledge to not provoke secondary crisis through acts or attitudes that are known to cause additional pain for other family members. For example, a family member might sooth their pain by stopping at a sports bar after work and watching a NASCAR race and drinking a beer, or walking alone in the woods [for two hours] before coming home...Or an adolescent might choose to spend $400 of his or her money saved for college on clothes or stereo equipment--impulsively, without consultation with a parent. The respect commitment says that for the time being each member will respect others by not engaging in behaviors that are within your "individual right" but are also known to be potentially incendiary (p. 320).

Ideas like this one are scattered throughout the text like so many chocolate espresso beans in my trail mix. And like those beans, they have helped me to think sharply about new techniques that could work with current clients, and brainstorm new ways of approaching therapy with future ones.

While a textbook by definition, it is conversational enough to read straight through. Granted, 500 pages will take you a while, so you may want to start with the family therapy models in which you have interest. The text surveys major family therapy models including:

 Bowenian Family Therapy

 Strategic Family Therapy

 Structural Family Therapy

 Psychodynamic Family Therapy

 Contextual Family Therapy

 Experiential Family Therapy

 Solution-Focused Family Therapy

 Cognitive-Behavioral Family Therapy

 Narrative Family Therapy

In the second half of the book, Yarhouse and Sells take a topic-based approach and address a selection of family therapy issues including crisis and trauma, marital conflict, and substance abuse.

Bottom Line

This is not a ground breaking study, a Yalom page-turner, or a self-improvement must-read. But it is an unusually well written textbook. It's a good choice if you're a therapist or counseling pastor looking for a serious guide to Christian family therapy.

Final Note: If you're looking for an Online Counseling Textbook, this is the best online therapy / telephone therapy text on the market:

A helpful and thorough book
By K. Knapp
This textbook covers all the major Family Therapy theories, but adds a Christian worldview analysis (of the given theory) at the end of each chapter. This addition stimulates good critical thinking skills in students and helps them understand the underpinnings of a theory philosophically, unlike many texts which just lists the theories. The text also includes a number of helpful topics such as crisis and trauma, substance abuse, etc. which affect families. The book is very well-written, and handles delicate family issues in a gracious and sensitive manner.

The United States Since 1980, by Dean Baker

This provocative book describes the sharp right turn the United States has taken following the election of Ronald Reagan as president in 1980. The treatment details how the policies pursued by the Reagan administration were a break from both the policies pursued by prior administrations and those pursued in other wealthy countries. The Reagan administration policies had the effect of redistributing both before- and after-tax income upward, creating a situation in which the bulk of the economic gains over the last quarter century were directed to a small segment of the population. The analysis explains how both political parties have come largely to accept the main tenets of Reaganism, putting the United States on a path that is at odds with most of the rest of the world and is not sustainable.

Dean Baker is the best
By Edward John Gross
This book isn't what I expected. I wanted more facts and information on how the middle class has lost ground since 1980. This book is a good overview of government policy for the past twenty five years. You walk away from this book with a good overview of history. I'm going to have to dig a little deeper for the actual data that this book was based upon.

I'm a huge Dean Baker fan. Most economists are slaves to their perspectives. It's really hard to get good economic and fiscal views outside the corporate American view. Baker allows us to be free.

Baker predicts a recession this year because of the housing bubble. Lets see how accurate he is. I'm betting on Baker. Don't bank on the Wall Street guys, they seem more interested in protecting their clients than getting you truth.

Anyone who doesn't understand the past . . .
By Amazon Customer
I am old enough to remember what this country was like before "trickle down" supply side economics. But many people don't. And that is exactly why those same hackneyed arguments about lowering taxes and shrinking government bureaucracy continue to have any impact at all. Even George Bush Senior referred to Reagan's plan as "voodoo economics." Hey, let's give all the money to the rich and maybe they'll give some of it back? Hmm.

Clearly the rich benefit more from tax cuts than anyone else. Say you make $25,000 a year, which would put you above the poverty line in 1980. That gives you a little over $2080 a month to live on, which, in 1980, was possible, depending on where you lived. But if you pay 15% in taxes, you're going to lose $512 per month to Uncle Sam. Wish you could keep it? Of course. $512 a month means a lot to you.

Now say you're making $25,000,000 a year. Uncle Sam is clipping you for more than 50% of that. But that still leaves you with $12,500,000 a year to live on. That's a million dollars a month. If your taxes get lowered to 35%, that gives you an additional $350,000 a month. A lot of money, sure, but you're not going to miss it as much as the guy who's making $25,000 misses his extra $512. And you're not going to miss it nearly as much as Uncle Sam, who's trying to fund programs that benefit, not just the middle class, but everyone, including the rich: education, infrastructure, public works.

Oh, but you're going to invest your tax windfall in job creation, right? Sure, job creation -- in Korea, or India, or China, or Outer Mongolia. If, since 1980, you've been investing in anything that benefits the average American, I would sure like to see what it is. If it's such a good idea to lower taxes and do away with government regulations, then why, after thirty years, do we still need to do more of it? It's like trying to cure a headache by beating your head against a wall. Still got a headache? Well, that just means you haven't done it enough.

This book will open your eyes, not just to what happened to taxes after Reagan, but what happened to labor unions, to health care, to education (did you know that state funded universities used to be FREE?) and to the banking industry. And for all their talk about reducing government spending, the neocons managed to explode the deficit. The only difference is, it was the middle class, rather than the rich, who got stuck with the bill.

Educational Courage: Resisting the Ambush of Public Education, by Mara Sapon-Shevin, Nancy Schniedewind

Lost amid the debate over educational policies are the stories of the educators, parents, and students who are most affected by legislation such as No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top. In Educational Courage, veteran educators and activists Nancy Schniedewind and Mara Sapon-Shevin bring together the voices of those who are resisting market-driven initiatives such as high-stakes testing, charter schools, mayoral control, and merit pay. The diverse narrators who write in this volume confront the educational agendas that undermine teachers’ judgment and knowledge, ignore the different backgrounds of students and parents, and debase the learning process. Yet these educators, parents, and activists also offer stories of resistance and hope as they fight to uphold the ideals of democratic public education.

Review
“In an age when the teachers of our nation and the public schools in which they work have been under fierce attack, these are the dynamic stories of resistance—of educators fighting back against the anti-democratic forces and benighted corporate agenda that are killing off the spirits of our children. A powerful book of intelligent defiance for which our badly battered teachers will be grateful.”—Jonathan Kozol, author of The Shame of the Nation and Fire in the Ashes

“Educational Courage shows the disastrous consequences of current reforms, as well as the insight and fortitude of educators whose classroom teaching and community organizing are nothing short of inspiring. You will find yourself hugging this book to your heart even as you share it with all those with whom you teach and learn and live.”—Kevin Kumashiro, author of Bad Teacher! How Blaming Teachers Distorts the Bigger Picture

“This inspirational volume documents various forms of formal and informal resistance struggles that courageously call for a reclaiming of public education as a core democratic principle of our society.”—Angela Valenzuela, author of Subtractive Schooling and Leaving Children Behind

“With this earnest compilation of essays and exposs, teachers and activists Schniedewind (Open Minds to Equality) and Sapon-Shevin (Because We Can Change the World) aim impassioned, statistic-tipped arrows at the political and corporate forces responsible for endangering the American public education system, and encourage readers to learn more about these forces. Through themes of disbelief, outrage, cooperative resistance, and activism, the authors introduce firsthand accounts from educators, parents, lawmakers, and students. The book sheds new light on this “ambush of public education” and the opportunities for poor students living in at-risk school districts, seen here as direct results of dysfunctional policies and institutions (No Child Left Behind, Race to the Top, Teach for America, corporate-funded charter schools) supposedly designed to integrate a socially just system for students and teachers. Standout contributors include a master’s degree candidate who had been denied her high school diploma because of a lone failing test score, and a public school teacher who, in a moment of hopelessness, accidentally became the leader of a grassroots campaign for reform. Though there’s much to bemoan about the current state of public education, we also learn there’s much that can be done.”
—Publishers Weekly

“This book helps us to be audacious in our activism and in our vision.”—from the Foreword by Deborah Meier

“Schniedewind and Sapon-Shevin knit together the stories of teachers, parents, scholars, and activists who have found imaginative ways to say no and “to act with courage and hope.”"
—Rethinking Schools

It offers the voices of those who are resisting legislation, policies, and practices that are inconsistent with a democratic vision of education and society. Rather than simply lamenting what is happening in our schools, these people are actively finding ways to foster educational equity for all in the face of significant odds. Educational reformer Deborah Meier says, “Resistance to nonsense is one of the greatest powers of human beings.”

The sound bites about “school reform” that we hear on the news are deceptive; the voices in this book are the real, seldom-heard accounts of those on the ground making a difference. Charts and graphs cannot tell us what it is like to teach in a kindergarten that has eliminated play, or what it is like to be forced to administer tests that you know your students cannot pass. It is through stories of the people who are in schools and communities that we can craft a picture of how education is being undermined and of how courageous people can make a difference.

This book tells stories of educators, parents, students, and community members who are individually and collectively fighting for public education that affirms young people and works for the common good. The voices here represent hundreds of thousands of others who continue to protest the policies that have damaged millions of young people and that have the potential to destroy public education. We hope this book encourages those who value public education to speak up and push policymakers in democratic directions. We hope readers will be able to envision and support alternatives to what is and work to transform current educational and other social policies and practices into those that nourish all young people.

The purpose of public education in a democracy is to provide a meaningful, challenging, and equitable education for all students, one that sets high academic expectations without regard to race, class, gender, family of origin, or language. Equally important is that students learn to participate in a democratic society and work with people different from themselves. We imagine schools in which students view one another as vital resources and understand that a successful society is one in which no person is discarded or disenfranchised. We work for diverse, inclusive school environments where thoughtfulness, care, and cooperation help prepare students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and active participants in their local and broader communities.

Educational policies driven by market concerns ambush the possibility for this kind of democratic education. High-stakes testing, voucher programs, corporate-connected charter schools, test-driven teacher evaluation, merit pay, mayoral control, and national standards put private corporations at the helm of education, rather than the public. Our educational system is being privatized and, in the process, our democracy is threatened.

The Educational Courage of Resisters

This book describes the reality of public schools and presents the stories of those who have had the courage to resist market-driven policies and practices from the initiation of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2002 to 2011. The voices in the book reflect different kinds of resistance, with people saying no in a variety of ways. While some spend their energy working within the system to provide meaningful education for young people, others concurrently take actions to resist them. Still others focus their energy on organizing collective activity to challenge ambushing practices at the local, state, and national levels. Many integrate all these approaches.

Part I, “Is This What We Call ‘Education’?” includes a history of the current ambush of public education and the effects of ill-considered federal legislation on young people, educators, parents, and communities. A teacher and parent describe what has happened to their teaching and to young people because of these policies and courageously dissent in a time characterized by conformity and fear. These accounts can help raise consciousness about the reality of schools today, a necessary place to start a movement for change.

The voices in part II, “ ‘I Won’t Be a Part of This!’—Educators, Parents, Students, and Community Members Resist,” represent many thousands of other people across the country who, as individuals and small groups, have resisted the current, top-down educational agenda. Some resist by writing op-ed pieces; some publicly say no by refusing to take a test or resigning from a charter school that has “gone corporate.” Others resist by organizing neighbors to change testing policies detrimental to English-language learners. By refusing to be silent, this group of writers gives courage to others who may think about similar actions.

“Resisting by ‘Working in the Cracks’—Creating Spaces to Teach Authentically,” part III, describes how educators, even when constrained, create space within the current system to teach authentically. Committed to developing students’ intellectual, social, and emotional learning, they explain how they foster socially just classrooms and schools and keep their teaching vibrant and curriculum relevant despite test-driven constraints. An encouraging account from one public alternative school, included on the Educational Courage website (www.beacon.org/educationalcourage), shows that “choice” for students and families is possible without the privatizing demands of charter schools. These stories of creativity, resilience, and perseverance will inspire other educators to find the cracks in their own educational settings where they can teach with young people at the center.

“‘Not My Voice Alone’—Organizing to Reclaim Public Education,” part IV, presents ways in which students, educators, parents, and community members have articulated alternative visions for public education and fought for meaningful change. Whether they’re resisting paying teachers for test scores, organizing against charter school takeovers, fighting mayoral control, or educating others about the dangers of a business model of education, these examples of organized, public resistance encourage others to reclaim a sense of urgency in fighting for public education. Contributors also describe the work of local and national organizations that have built coalitions for broader outreach and advocacy. Writers present a vision of ways we can act together toward progressive, multicultural, and democratic schools as we move into the future.

Even more voices of resilience and courage are found on the Educational Courage website. Coordinated with the book sections, pieces there offer powerful stories from others who fight for public education. In addition, the Educational Courage website contains practical materials related to the narratives in the book. Fact sheets from the National Center for Fair and Open Testing (FairTest) and Parents United for Responsible Education (PURE), for example, provide excellent examples of materials that educate others. There are also resource lists of organizations and materials, a bibliography, and contributor biographies.

The pieces in Educational Courage are organized by theme rather than chronologically. The sequence builds from understanding school realities, to stories of individual resistance, to accounts of meaningful teaching despite top-down constraints, and finally to narratives of organized, collective resistance. A chronology of the creeping assault on public education from the passage of NCLB in 2002 to 2011—“A Short History of the Ambush of Public Education”—introduces part I. A snapshot of the movement to protest against these policies, provided next, gives context to the voices of the resisters whose stories you’ll read in Educational Courage.

A Decade of Educational Activism

Ever since the ambush of public education began, there have been educators, parents, and students who have spoken up to protest these hurtful policies. While market-driven initiatives began to threaten public education during the Reagan administration, they became solidly institutionalized in federal educational policy with the passage of NCLB. While people have spoken out to counter these policies over the past thirty years, this book focuses on the decade since 2002.

Well before NCLB, organizations and individuals were advocating for progressive, democratic education. Some like the North Dakota Study Group focused on building democratic classrooms and schools and critiqued narrow methods of accountability and assessments. Others like the National Coalition of Educational Activists, a multiracial organization of parents, teachers, child advocates, union, and community activists, connected educational advocacy to broader struggles for social justice, equality, and democracy in order to improve public education.

Founded by Milwaukee teachers and parents in 1985, Rethinking Schools magazine became a voice not only for those doing meaningful social justice education in their schools, but for those resisting policies that undercut educational equity. Rethinking Schools continues to link classroom issues to policy concerns and chronicles the activism of teachers, parents, and students fighting for quality education for all children. Its superb books and curricula support educators working to enable students to achieve academically and act democratically.

In the late 1990s, more resisters sounded the alarm about the dangers of standardizing education. Susan Ohanian wrote the influential One Size Fits Few: The Folly of Educational Standards in 1999 and has been writing about the dangers of testing and the privatization of public education ever since. In the same year, George N. Schmidt, a well-respected veteran teacher, was fired from his twenty-eight-year teaching job in Chicago when h...

Educating Educators
By K. Hodgkiss
As a 33 year veteran teacher, I found this collection inspiring and informative. While reading this great collection of essays from a variety of educators I realized I was not alone in my frustration with the criticisms of public education. While the public seems quick to dump the blame for the failures in public education at the feet of teachers and their unions, this book serves to give cause to boomerang that fault where it belongs. What makes the argument so compelling is partly due to the variety of spokespeople contributing, as well as the true experiences they site. I found myself cheering while reading this book and saying aloud "That's what I said! That's what I thought." A great read for new teachers, students studying for teaching as well as experienced teachers. But please buy two. One for yourself and one for someone you know who thinks teachers are the problem.

Down with high stakes testing
By Carol W. Bachofner
This book is so good that I ordered it both in paper and on my kindle. I wish my entire school board would read it. We need to STOP high-stakes testing in this country now. It is ruining our schools. This book tackles the topic with anecdotes and factual data. A must have for educators, administrators, and boards. Oh, parents too. Stand up against this terrible practice. This book will give you courage.

Optimal Cupid: Mastering the Hidden Logic of OkCupid, by Christopher McKinlay

An easy-to-implement blueprint from the mathematician who reverse-engineered OkCupid and met the woman of his dreams in 90 days. Christopher McKinlay has been featured in Wired Magazine and Good Morning America for his groundbreaking analysis of OkCupid. For the first time he’s showing non-experts how to turn Internet dating on its head. This concise guide will show anyone (straight, gay, male or female) the procedure McKinlay used to meet his fiancee and how the same ideas can transform their lives and bring them from browsing to contact. One summer evening while logged into a supercomputer in Colorado waiting for a large computation, McKinlay was killing time on OkC when he was troubled by a problem: what if large groups of people responded to OkCupid’s personality questionnaire in statistically similar ways? He created custom software to scrape data from the site, collecting over 6,000,000 answers to OkC’s “match questions” from more than 20,000 real users. This data made clear he’d been using the site the wrong way. Based on his findings, McKinlay (a mathematics PhD), optimized his own profile. The transformation was profound. He went from showing a “match percentage” of 90% with a few hundred women in the L.A. area to showing 90% or higher with over 30,000 local women. Unsolicited messages from attractive strangers began flooding his inbox. With a foreword by Jon Finkel, McKinlay’s insightful how-to will teach you how to benefit from the buried statistical patterns of online romance.

About the Author
Christopher McKinlay is an applied mathematician. While still a graduate student at UCLA, he used a variety of machine learning techniques to reverse-engineer the dating website OkCupid. He received over 1,000 unsolicited messages from women, resulting in 88 dates over the course of three months. His 88th date was with his fiancee.

Meh...
By Carlos C.
Let's start with the good:

1. Responder Strategy: this is a strategy of reducing the number of messages and prospective matches so that you get more of the wheat and less of the chaff. This would basically involve avoiding non-divisive questions (basically avoid answering questions that most prospective matches near you would answer the same way), mark few answers as being acceptable for each match question as much as possible, and set questions with one acceptable answer as "mandatory" (lol), two acceptable answers as "very important", and 3+ acceptable answers as somewhat important.

2. Simulated Annealing Procedure: a step-by-step procedure of answering okcupid questions based on your strategy. In summary:

A. delete all your match questions;
B. answer new match questions based on one of the strategies (preferably the responder one and my advise is to answer only questions you deem very important at first, then for each very important match question, answer 25 somewhat important questions);
C. browse for your matches, organized by match percentage;
D. click on one of the top matches and answer their questions;
E. Rinse and repeat...

3. Hooks: basically, write down anything about yourself that would attract your desirable matches enough to message you and be as specific about them as possible. These would include hobbies, career, jokes, etc.

4. Additional tips on sending messages, how to conduct yourself on a date, etc.

Now for for the bad:

1. Searcher Strategy: the very opposite of Responder Strategy and what basically Mckinlay used in his search (SPOILER ALERT: his fiancee found him through a keyword search for tall men with blue eyes near her.). The problem with this strategy is that it generates more chaff than wheat, thus wasting the time and, potentially, money trying to narrow down your prospective matches. Unless the idea of a success rate of 4.5% sounds appealing to you, you might want to avoid this strategy.

2. Outdated information: the internet does age quickly doesn't it? Unless you've been living in space with Major Tom, all of us know that the Importance Scale has changed from a five to four point scale. Also, according to an email I've received from Okcupid staff, mandatory wasn't deleted, but renamed to "very important". Thus, the old "very important" (a question of a weight of 50) has actually been deleted. But it's a minor flaw.

3. Length: waaaay too short. Why couldn't he just write a blog series about his guide to optimizing cupid so that we don't have to spend any mon... nevermind.

Overall, it's not that bad. Is it worth buying though? I think I got some worth from it, but so far many have written about Mckinlay's strategy and procedure. Thus, you probably already have an idea of how to implement it without actually buying the book. :-P

A Peek Behind The Curtain Of Online Dating
By Curt Styler
After hearing of MiKinlay's story from Wired, I thought it would be fun to do some reading about the method he used in finding his perfect match. This short paper does a great job of summarizing the analysis he did and how he used that data to build a dating profile that appealed to the women he wanted to meet.

If your looking for the code he used, or his exact algorithms your out of luck. There's none of that here. Which is a good thing because if EVERYBODY started doing exactly what he did then it would be useless. However he does give a step by step process on how to optimize your match percentage and give tips on how to find the questions you SHOULD be answering instead of the random stream OKC gives you.

I know some of the comments over on Wired were saying how that article was just an ad for this book/paper. Honestly I don't care, this is a fun little look at the data behind online matchmaking. McKinlay just used that data to make his match percentage higher with the type of people he wanted to meet, which is really what online dating is all about.

I for one would be interested to know what other insights you could glean from the data he (and OKC) have collected. Big data is here to stay and this just gives some practical advice to use on OKC.

Good OKC approach for scientifically-minded OKC users
By Jack SF
Like many people, I saw the article in Wired this week. I've been using OKC for a while, and thought it was pretty interesting. I actually spent a few hours analyzing the article, trying to figure out how I could apply it to my own profile. (It did help a bit.)

Then I saw this book. Not all of us are going to write Python scripts to build our profiles or anything like that, but this book is the perfect distillation what he did. In other words—exactly what I needed to apply the info to the profile, nothing more, nothing less.

Worth the $5 if you're an analytical, logical person.

Bullspotting: Finding Facts in the Age of Misinformation, by Loren Collins

This entertaining and educational book applies the tools of critical thinking to identify the common features and trends among misinformation campaigns. With illustrations drawn from conspiracy theorists and deniers of every stripe, the author teaches readers how rumors are started, and the rhetorical techniques and logical fallacies often found in misleading or outright false claims.

What distinguishes real conspiracies from conspiracy theories, real science from pseudoscience, and actual history from bogus accounts purporting to be history? How does one evaluate the credibility of rumors and quotes or judge the soundness of legal arguments advanced by tax deniers? Readers will learn how to make these critical distinctions and also how to spot "evidence" that has been manufactured or manipulated in some way to create a false impression.

At a time when average citizens are bombarded with false information every day, this entertaining book will prove to be not only a great read but also an indispensable resource.

Review
"This is a book that everyone should take to heart. It reminds us that the human intellectual capacity for self-deception is infinite. A great read!"
- Nicholas Capaldi, director, Center for Spiritual Capital, Loyola University New Orleans, and author of The Art of Deception

"This highly readable and entertaining book is full of wonderful examples of BS. It also provides a very useful compendium of the warning signs of BS. We all need to build some immunity to BS - especially youngsters. This book is a good place to start."
- Dr. Stephen Law, philosopher and author of Believing Bullshit

About the Author
Loren Collins (Atlanta, GA) has been published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on the topics of misinformation and critical thinking. An attorney and firm associate with the Law Office of W. Great and fun to read resource with a serious subject
By G. Tanner
Bulls#*t can and should be a fun and often hilarious topic of discussion, but it can quickly become a sad and sometimes horrifying subject once one realizes just how many absurd beliefs are held by so many people. With that in mind, it is great how Collins writes in a way that is both entertaining and yet still serious. This book is not a complete expos of all the bull out in the world, but Collins does expose the important underlying motivations and deceitful tactics used by various bull-mongerers so that readers can become proficiently equipped to spot bull for themselves. An obvious problem to this book is that its message will likely be ignored by those who need it most. As Collins explains throughout the book, peddlers of bull are too skilled at dodging, denying, and/or ignoring legitimate arguments and evidence to benefit from the more than reasonable message found in his book. But the book's likely inability to better inform those bull-believers who need it most provides more reason for the rest of us to utilize this resource and others like it. Just as vaccinations for infectious diseases become more beneficial to the proximate population as more individuals are immunized, the same goes for our society's ability to cultivate communities where individuals can think critically and not be duped by bull.

Irrationality too deep to be explained in such a short book
By Samuel Martinsson
This book portrays itself as scientific antidote and critical thinking tool to fight birthers, truthers, holocaust denialists, conspiracy theorists and other quacks. Unfortunately, these targets are just too quirky: science cannot do much about, maybe psychiatry might. It is good to be critical, and Collins provides some really nice examples of uncovering internet rumors and misquotations. But you cannot really fight JFK assisination conspiratists with science.

I would recommend three more constructive books:
*Michael Shermer: Why do people believe weird things (this one tries to understand where do all these strange beliefs come from, and not just offer science antidote).
*Massimo Pigliucci: Nonsense on stilts (this one squarely puts science against law, religion, pseudoscience, and shows how science is different)
*Moti Ben-Ari: Just a theory (basics of philosophy of science in very digestible format: induction, hypothesis, statistics; plus sociology of science, postmodernist critique, reductionism...)

A timely and entertaining guide to critical thinking
By deusexmachina
The author of this book exposed one of the vilest hoaxes of the 2012 presidential campaign, that Barack Obama's mother once posed for pornographic photos. The author located the magazines that originally published the photos and, on his blog Barackryphal, he showed the photos were published when Obama's mother was only 15 years old and years before she moved to Hawaii where the photos were supposedly taken.

This excellent bit of research alone would make his new book on the art and science of detecting nonsense worth a look. However, he also turns out to be a clear, incisive writer who can tell an interesting story to illustrate a point.

The result is that even inveterate skeptics will find this book a good read. It provides a choice selection of recent hoaxes, conspiracies and false rumours to demonstrate how the tools of skepticism work. Perhaps because the author is a lawyer, the chapter on pseudolaw (legal theory that relies on frivolous arguments) is especially interesting.

As befitting a book on searching for truth, there are extensive notes and references at the end.
