Great book - excellent examples and assignments

I used this book in an Introduction to GIS class. It gave me a solid grasp of what GIS is and can do. The examples in the book are very clear, as there are step by step instructions with screenshots that insure you will not get lost.

The assignments in the book are very helpful and reflect what was taught in the chapter. Some assignments are on the easy side, but many are challenging and require a good deal of critical thinking.

Many of the examples and assignments that I learned from I applied to other concepts in GIS and other mapping software. I took a class using this book a year ago, and now I work full-time using different mapping software, but most of the concepts I learned from this book I still use.

Version 10 workbook - well done!

This is the update of the prior GIS Tutorial Workbook to include all the new ArcGIS version 10 stuff. Well written and easy to follow, my students work through this with great ease and are able to perform the exercise tasks on their own with a little guidance and a review through the text.

Each chapter has really good exercises to challeng you and see if you have grapsed the knowledge. So there's hand-holding when you need it, and the freedom to run with the concepts when you don't.

Very well suited for individual study as well as classroom use.

Not bad if you want to teach yourself

This is a lab textbook for me but since we don't actually use it in lab... It is considered a homework book by our professor and we don't get any assistance from our lab instructor. Fortunately the book does a decent job walking you through the quite crazy ArcGIS Suite. My version is for 10 but I'm working with 10.1, doesn't seem to be too different to make that an issue. For someone that is adept at learning software this package will throw a curve ball at first but as with any new field and software more use means it becomes much easier and eventually intuitive. Which is great if you have the worst TA ever in lab. ;^)
If you want to understand what you're doing and why I think a formal course with this tutorial is best. If you're just learning new stuff because you haven't used ArcGIS since an older version it will serve the purpose. Bonus the book comes with a 1 year copy of ArcGIS (10 in this version). Can't beat that for the price of the book.

This Book Tells It Like It Is

As a soon to be teacher, and part time archaeologist, this is by far the best book about archaeology for young kids I have found. It gives accurate information in fun, easy to understand language. My students were always interested in my summer and weekend work outside of the school. It was wonderful to find a book I could share with them that was not over their heads. My archaeology professor from college even borrowed it to share with his entry level classes.

This is the best book I've seen for children about archaeology! I am a professional archaeologist and this book covers ALL the misconceptions about what archaeologists really do while still making it sound like we have fun. I bought numerous copies of this book to give to nieces and nephews, neighbors, etc. I wish most of the adults I talk to about archaeology had read this book...I'd get a lot fewer question about my favorite dinosaur or about the most expensive artifact I have ever found!

A True Find!

From what I have seen, the "Lets Read and Find Out" series is very solid, but even within the series, this book stands out. Archeology is explained from the perspective of a story - kids are invited to help out real archeologists on a dig. And because it's real archeology, they have to learn about things like how and why to dig in plots, how and when to make plaster casts, etc. The detail was great enough that I - as a non-archeologist adult - learned a few things, but told compellingly and simply enough that my young daughter thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Archeology, like paleontology and geology (hmm, all have to do with digging in the dirt...) has its own coolness factor. But it is also useful in showing us how we learn about what happened in the past. This book definitely has the wow factor AND the "oh, so that's how/why it works" component. I really appreciate the author for respecting kids' intelligence and curiosity while also being able to weave a compelling story. Kudos! (Oh, and, if you're thinking about it, get this book!)

Excellent introduction to the Web Audio API

The author explains the Web Audio API very concisely while coupling the core information with basic audio theory for non-audio savvy developers. As someone being on the opposite side of the fence (an audio-geek turned javascript developer) I very much enjoyed the concepts and code examples presented (and am still learning). If you're like me and want to learn how to program audio based browser applications there is no better time to learn javascript and get a copy of this book. I gave it 5 stars but I admit I'm also a bit biased due to the subject matter. My only gripe is I would have liked to have read a reinterpretation of the material referred to in Chris Wilson's "Tales Of Two Clocks" essay. As a beginner-intermediate developer it's still a bit confusing. Still it's a minor point relative to the greater body of work.

A great Introduction to Web Audio API

This was just what I was looking for. I needed a clear and concise text to get me going with the awesome Web Audio API. W3C's standard specification is thorough but doesn't have examples of how to put everything together. This little (but detailed) book bridges the gap between specification and real code examples.

The only thing the author could have left out (as well as many other books using JavaScript) is the layers of abstraction. For example, this.object.prototype = function(this.return(self)); . We don't really need an audio library - we just need one-stop snippets to get each exercise/example working. I found myself trying to trace the code paths up and down so that I can see where a function is coming from or what it needs to work. All I want to see is low-level code dealing specifically with Web Audio, even if the set-up is redundant for each example. Please leave the prototype library for us to implement.

Other than that, a must have book if you want to try the Web Audio API for yourself. Highly Recommended!

Excellent intro with depth

I give this book 5 stars because it took me in a short while some good way down the path from newbie to ninja in understanding and using the Web Audio API. All this within 60 odd pages! Yet, the API is covered in sufficient depth for any web developer to be able to exploit its new and very powerful features.

This book complements the Web Audio API spec very well. Highly recommended.

Wojtyla and John of the Cross... scholastics?

Oh, what a provocative title to my review! Alas, I will explain the title below. But for now, the current book under review is Karol Wojtyla's doctoral dissertation from 1948 at the Angelicum under the direction of Father Garrigou-Lagrange. Wojtyla studies the concept of faith is found in the writings of St John of the Cross; that is, in The Ascent of Mount Carmel, Dark Night of the Soul, Spiritual Canticle, and The Living Flame of Love. Hence, as Wojtyla admits on page 237, faith in this dissertation is studied from the point of view of "mystical theology" as opposed fundamental, dogmatic, or moral theology. This point of view is extremely brilliant and at the same time profoundly simple. I will discuss Wojtyla's main thesis below as well as the relationship to scholasticism.

What is, from the mystical point of view, faith? Before we can begin to answer this question, early on page 18, notes that :the study of Scholastic theology provided the foundation" for John of the Cross' writings. Wojtyla goes on to discuss how such a scholastic metaphysics is simply presupposed to understand John of the Cross, and that there is no conflict between John of the Cross and Aquinas. On the contrary, there is conformity of doctrine. Such a claim seems shocking to people, yet the detailed harmonization of the teaching of the interior life as found in Aquinas and John of the Cross was the subject of Wojtyla's advisor's book "Christian Perfection and Contemplation." These are only a few brief points, but suffice it to say that claims like "there is no room for the mystical in Aquinas" or "Wojtyla departed from the Scholastics" is entirely unfounded. As we will see, we cannot even answer our question about faith from the mystical point of view without presupposing Scholastic metaphysics. It is also worth noting that Wojtyla gives a hint that what will turn out to be his Christian Phenomenology will be Scholastic theology from a "personal experience" point of view. On page 23 he writes "[the doctrine] is expressed in scholastico-mystical language, using words and concepts well known in Scholastic theology, but its primary value and significance is a witness of personal experience." Those who would separate Wojtyla and Thomas take note.

Now to the main question. By its very nature, man's intellect cannot grasp the divine. That is, the essence of man's intellect does not have the potency in-and-of-itself to apprehend God. Faith, then, is a means to an end. Faith is the means by which the intellect rises to union with God. This is repeated several times in the book, starting on page 33. On page 42, Wojtyla writes "... the virtue of faith is acknowledged as the way to union [with God]. It is the proportionate means of union, and therefore possesses an essential likeness to God. This means that the essence of faith and divinity somehow relate to another and converge." Wojtyla goes on to say that no created thing can serve as this means, and hence, faith must be "something similar to divinity." More generally, all the theological virtues relate man to God by uniting their respective faculties (faith to intellect, hope to memory, charity to will) to God. But faith surpasses understanding, as opposed to method of the intellect. Thus begins a discussion of how on the one hand faith sheds light on God, yet it is still in darkness since "the divinity as known by the intellect through faith is not clearly manifested but hidden in teh intentional order of knowledge." (p 67) The nest several pages go on to discuss that faith has teh paradoxical property of being both "light and darkness." The darkness by which the mind enlightened by faith sees God is especially frustrating for the intellect since the very nature of the intellect is to grasp or understand the form of what it has been presented. But even with faith, man cannot totally grasp the form of God through his intellect, so that the intellect which is enlightened by faith never comes to rest, and is always contemplating. This is simply beautiful stuff! As Wojtyla writes "The 'dark habit' of faith is opposed to knowledge not because of a lack of demonstration but a lack of form." (p 210) If this isn't thinking deeply grounded in Scholasticism, I don't know what is!

In summary, man does not have the natural capacity for union with God. Faith is the means by which the intellect rises to union with God, the ends. Faith is a means to an ends which presents God the intellect in an intelligible way, yet one in which the intellect cannot fully grasp the form. I found this book so insightful, so profound. The reading of this text has shed for me new light on some of the writings of JPII, as being aware of his scholastic background makes his future writings more intelligible. This is an important work, one that will also dispose the reader to more easily understand John of the Cross as well. In short, all should read the formative intellectual work of one the most influential popes of the 20th century.
