Best introduction to TCM

This book is the best text out there in explaining the concept of TCM. For a long time communication engineers had to settle with achievable performance 6 dB away from channel capacity, and Ungerboeck's discovery, which is now celebrated and generalized as TCM, took us 3 dB closer to the limits of communications.
This book does not require a strong background in coding theory: in fact, the first 2-3 chapters can serve as a good tutorial on the principles of coding. However, an intuition of digital modulation is a pre-requisite, and the reader is well rewarded in reading this book.
The authors make very effective use of the many diagrams in this book, and even covers TCM over fading channels, an important area where they have all made fundamental contributions.

Manly P. Hall did it again

This excellent easy reading book should be our guide to a complete reform of the medical system, kicking the big pharma and capitalist companies that thrive on creating more sick people out of the equation and placing man back at the centre where he belongs. There is a lot of wisdom in this book, the spiritual and the physical aspects of healing weren't separate many centuries ago, this is the guide of the medicine of the future.

Most under-rated book ever!

This is in my own opinion the most under-rated book ever. I've read many books by Manly Hall and this is the best. Somehow it is not as popular as many of his other books, and most of Manly Hall's readers probably have never even heard of this book. The book goes into details on the history of healing from prehistory, through the ancient world, and all the way up to the modern day. Any student of anthropology or psychology should read this book, along with anyone into the healing arts or occult sciences of any kind.

I must mention that the information contained is easy-to-read and not necessarily for any advanced student of the occult sciences, unlike Hall's "Man: Grand Symbol of the Mysteries" which I would only suggest to more advanced students looking for specific details on the symbolism of the human body.

an overlooked gem

This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the healing arts. The first part is fabulous, detailing the history of esoteric healing from witch doctors (replace with shamans in modern terminology), to medicine men, through Greek healers such as Asclepius & Hippocrates, to how Christianity set back healing (excepting Paracelsus), to modern healing cults. His spirit and sensitivity is clearly on display throughout the work. Part II is also very interesting, particularly exploring esoteric physiology and the role of the pineal gland. I know another reviewer questioned the final chapters, however I found them to be very far-sighted in many ways. Hall gives warnings about metaphysical diseases, mostly due to seekers becoming too ungrounded in their enthusiasm to a particular cult or way of viewing things. In fact, I had to laugh a bunch of times since he seemed to be describing our modern era extremely well with warnings about diet fads, adherence to mental positivity (Hicks and the Secret), breathing exercises, etc... All this was written in 1943, so all that seems new, has been there in our history all along.

Traditional Psalms

Do not be fooled by the title, "A New Translation". This is the Grail translation that is used by priests and religious throughout the English speaking world. It was done in 1963. There is no playing down of masculine imagery or cutting off of masculine pronouns. The introduction is very helpful in understanding the way in which each psalm is divided. A must own for those who pray the Divine Office.

I am Episcopal and recently discovered this translation of the Psalms in a monthly liturgical magazine - Magnificat. Because I liked the translation I ordered this book. A unique feature of this book is the chant music included at the end. Each psalm has a suggested chant melody, one that fits its structure and mood. Find the music at the back and you can chant the psalm.
The only drawback is that the music is printed so small as to be almost unreadable. I got around this by making an enlarged copy of each page, and that works well for me.

Best version around

This psalter is the backbone of the Catholic Liturgy of the Hours and has been my prayer book for 30 years. Unlike many "singing versions" of the psalms, this one preserves the parallelism and (to some degree) the meter of the original Hebrew. It is a starkly simple and brutally honest rendering of the emotive language found in the original psalms; there is nothing sentimental in this translation, but every emotion and mood is dealt with frankly, as is fitting in a prayer book. The syntax is natural and clear, without the awkward, hyperconscious crafting that is in so many bad hymns that are based on the psalms. The tones in the back are suggestions only, and there are a number of other options available for chanting this psalter, either privately or communally; some of the tones are haunting and sublime.

In short, this is a bare but beautiful translation; I don't know if you could do better in contemporary English.

About the Author
Jerry Scutts has worked in the field of aviation publishing since the late 1960s, writing over 40 books that have covered a broad spectrum of subject matter ranging from US Navy floatplane fighters in World War 2 to the exploits of the USAF's Phantom IIs over Vietnam. His specialist areas are the Luftwaffe and the US Army Air Forces in World War 2, and he originally appeared on the Osprey list as long ago as 1977, when he wrote the second volume in the now much sought after Air Cam Air War series –- many of the jacket illustrations in this series were also painted by him. Jerry has been a regular contributor to Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series since its inception in 1994.

GOOD START FOR THIS SERIES

This series began well with this book by Jerry Scutts. It is really difficult to cover in one short volume all the aces that flew P-51 with the Eight air Force in WW II, and Scutts tried to give the reader a general view of their tasks and accomplishments. THe appendix at the end is very valuable. Good work.

Great book. I only think that, in the appendix (which are fantastic) the author should have shown also the number of ground kills by the aces.

Excellent, but...

As I said on the review of the Synoptics: I enjoyed the book that, with its companion "on the synoptic gospels", form a source of "inside" information that otherwise I woudln't have access to. The book is structure according to a regular commentary with additional "notes" or "reading scenarious." Unfortunately, there are no footnotes; therefore, when they tell you abuot a particular custom of that time, there is no direct reference to a primary source. Therefore, you have to take their words for it. There is a bibliography, which can help a bit, but still you're left with no way to further a specific point.

Indespensible tool for studying the Gospel of John

Bruce Malina and Richard Rohrbaugh show that the Christian community of John's Gospel was an "anti-society", that is, a consciously alternative society consisting of exiles, rebels, or ostracized deviants. (They note parallel examples of anti-societies, such as reform-school students in Poland, members of the underworld in India, and vagabonds in Elizabethan England.) As such, it had developed its own "anti-language", that is, a resistance language used to maintain its highly sectarian religious reality. This accounts for many of the strange expressions found in the gospel. For instance, the Christians of this community referred to all outsiders as people of "this world". They believed that all members of wider society -- especially "the Jews" -- lay outside the scope of redemption and were completely beyond the pale. Like all anti-societies, they overlexicalized their language, which basically means that they used redundant euphemisms. Thus, "believing into Jesus", "abiding in him", "loving him", "keeping his word", "receiving him", "having him", and "seeing him" all meant the same thing. Likewise, "bread", "light", "door", life", "way", and "vine" were all redundant metaphors for Jesus himself. This anti-language served to maintain inner solidarity in the face of pressures (or perhaps even persecutions) from wider society. Unlike the religious language found in the Synoptic Gospels or Paul's letters, John's language would have been meaningless in the context of wider Judeo-Christian society ("this world").
Understanding this social background is crucial for interpreting the gospel as a whole and controversial passages in particular.........................

Fine Work

Dr. Malina asked me to read and review an early form of this book a few years back, of which I did not realize at the time was the first reading of this fine work. As a personal friend and past student of Dr. Malina, I can say with full sincerity that Dr. Malina's work is some of the most under-acknowledged scholarly writing of our time in this area of study. This fine volume carries on the Malina tradition of scholarly excellence in chasing down and capturing with pure mind-blowing enlightenment the multi-dimensional, historical truth behind the creation and content of John. This volume is an absolute necessity for anyone even halfway attempting to respectfully comprehend John in its rightful, historical context. This book is so wonderfully researched and executed that I can hardly recommend it enough. I urge anyone who has reached this review to order this book and all others by Dr. Malina for an extremely interesting and educational look at the world of Jesus, and furthermore, a look at how much the modern Church has distorted and twisted hardcore Biblical truth (for one of thousands of examples, check out Dr. Malina's 1995 book on Revelation and compare it to the feeble and cheap trash put out by jokesters and ill-educated fundamentalists such as Hal Lindsey). You will never look at John the same after reading this book, but I promise your life will be changed through the deep and meaningful questioning this and other Malina volumes will bring about. Do yourself and Biblical scholarship a favor and read this great book and pass the word on.
