Intriguing!
By Alicia
This book had elements that were good, but again, it felt just like a setup to something bigger. In this case, it’s obvious. (It’s in the title of the next book. No spoilers here.) All the same, I liked it. (But really. All four of these books have felt like setups for some big plot. There are parts that definitely hint at it, and this book has the biggest reveal yet, but no real action so far.)

In any case, the journey to Vampire Mountain is dangerous, but a few notable things happen. Darren makes friends with wolves. I loved this especially because Darren really cares about the wolves and animals in general. You can tell. He’s reluctant to leave them. He even goes after a bear to protect a wolf cub. It’s crazy. Bears are dangerous, man. But I liked what they added to the story.

One of my favorite parts was with one of the Little People sent to escort them by Mr. Tiny. We learn a whole lot more about them. Again, no spoilers, but I love it. They’re fascinating.

Vampire Mountain is pretty cool in its own way. Vampires are a bit stuffy and prefer to be primitive and stick to tradition, but they still have a pretty cool way of life. Wouldn’t fancy it myself, but it’s fun to read about. We also meet a lot of new people.

Then of course there’s the big reveal that makes it pretty clear what the main plot is going to be of the next several books (if not all of them). We don’t get many answers or much information, but it’s intriguing enough. And then Darren has his own quest to fulfill first. I look forward to reading about that next.

Good read but frustrating ending…
By Paul D
So great story, the plot is building, it’s really starting to get good and then, TO BE CONTINUED…

Really? The book is only 212 pages long! I get that the author is writing these for a young audience but we can sit and read a book that’s longer than 200 pages. The Harry Potter series should have proven that. If you’re going to publish a book then make it a complete story for crying out loud. Right now I just feel cheated. If the rest of the series ends up being the same, not sure I’m willing to invest my time in it.

The Mythology Comes Out
By Amazon Customer
The four entry in the Darren Shan series proves to be the most interesting yet the least-action packed of any of the previous novels. Upon reading the first four books in the series it is easy to see why Universal Pictures* has decided to adapt the 12 books into 4 separate movies (each movie chronologically focuses on a book trilogy). The books are interesting, easy to read, and not too childish (as one might perceive from the large font and short page count) - but at the same time they do take a lot of time for things to really start going. It wasn't until the fourth book that any of the mythology has started to come into the play.

The first three novels can easily be summarized as Darren Shan's introduction into the world of Vampire's and later a particular ensemble of creaturesFun. They can easily been seen as a collective story (as they deal with Darren's destruction of his human-life to his nave acceptance of his vampire life) but they also each have their own distinct manner.

The fourth book is a bit of a departure for that. It seems that the author, now confident with his series and armed with an established world, has finally set out to tell the story he has been itching to get to. The book takes place approximately 8 years after the events of the third book and equally works as a sequel, while keeping a distinct distance from the series epilogue. In this novel the author has confidence in his story and his characters enough to finally delve into his vampire mythology and lore - something he seemed unwilling to do in previous novels.

But this becomes a double edged sword for the novel: it brings the reader to a whole new level within the `Cirque du Freak' world - but so much time is spent in the novel telling the back story that the book suffers from a lack of a plot. There is a beginning and a middle but no real end. There is no climax. There is character growth (a lot of it), but this particular installment finished unfulfilled because the reader is left with more confusion than anything else.

If the reader can get beyond the books lack in plot (this book seems to set the tone that the remainder of the series will stray from self-contained stories into overlapping arc-like structures) they are rewarded with a very rich history, some particularly interesting (both psychologically, biologically and even in view of popular culture) liberties with the vampire. The character's of "Harkart" and the various vampire supporting-cast as well as the mysterious Mr. Tiny are all developed well beyond anything seen in the previous novels. For the first time as a reader I looked beyond the obvious peril and emotion in the book and starting to really care for the characters. Because I have spent more time with them, because they are more fleshed-out, and because his book easily hints at some pretty amazing storytelling in future books.

A History of Western Choral Music, Volume 1, by Chester L. Alwes

A History of Western Choral Music explores the various genres, key composers, and influential works essential to the development of the western choral tradition. Author Chester L. Alwes divides this exploration into two volumes which move from Medieval music and the Renaissance era up to the 21st century. Volume I surveys the choral music of composers including Josquin, Palestrina, Purcell, Handel, and J.S. Bach while detailing the stylistic, textual, and extramusical considerations unique to the topics covered. Consideration of Renaissance music includes both sacred and secular works, specifically addressing the growth of sacred music, the rise of secular music, and the proliferation of sacred polyphony from Josquin to Palestrina. Discussion of the Baroque era is organized by geographic location, exploring the spread of Baroque style from Italy to German, France, and England. Volume I concludes by examining the aesthetic underpinnings of the early Classical and Romantic eras. Framing discussion within the political, religious, cultural, philosophical, aesthetic, and technological contexts of each era, A History of Western Choral Music offers readers specialized insight into major composers and works while providing a cohesive understanding of choral music's place in Western history.

From Library Journal
In her seventh book, Oliver--Pulitzer Prize winner for her 1984 collection, American Primitive ( LJ 2/15/83)--carries readers into her vivid landscape and involves them in her process of discovery and recognition--from the tiny white spot in the distance, to the realization that it's a bird, to the name and song of the bird. This is a poet who rhetorically asks: "how could there be a day in your whole life/ that doesn't have its splash of happiness?" Lyrical lines move gracefully across the page as the spirituality mounts. One is tempted to call these poems too "poetic" or "romantic," but Oliver does not avoid nature's cruelty. With original, compelling vision, she discovers the same "splash of happiness" in the snow shining around a beggar boy or the smile of a woman cleaning toilets in Indonesia. Recommended.
- Rochelle Ratner, formerly Poetry Editor, "Soho Weekly News," New York

Review
Oliver's poems are thoroughly convincing--as genuine, moving, and implausible as the first caressing breeze of spring. -The New York Times Book Review

About the Author
A private person by nature, Mary Oliver has given very few interviews over the years. Instead, she prefers to let her work speak for itself. And speak it has, for the past five decades, to countless readers. The New York Times recently acknowledged Mary Oliver as “far and away, this country’s best-selling poet.” Born in a small town in Ohio, Oliver published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of 28; No Voyage and Other Poems, originally printed in the UK by Dent Press, was reissued in the United States in 1965 by Houghton Mifflin. Oliver has since published many works of poetry and prose. As a young woman, Oliver studied at Ohio State University and Vassar College, but took no degree. She lived for several years at the home of Edna St. Vincent Millay in upper New York state, companion to the poet’s sister Norma Millay. It was there, in the late ’50s, that she met photographer Molly Malone Cook. For more than forty years, Cook and Oliver made their home together, largely in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where they lived until Cook’s death in 2005. Over the course of her long and illustrious career, Oliver has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has also received the Shelley Memorial Award; a Guggenheim Fellowship; an American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Achievement Award; the Christopher Award and the L.L. Winship/PEN New England Award for House of Light; the National Book Award for New and Selected Poems; a Lannan Foundation Literary Award; and the New England Booksellers Association Award for Literary Excellence. Oliver’s essays have appeared in Best American Essays 1996, 1998, 2001; the Anchor Essay Annual 1998, as well as Orion, Onearth and other periodicals. Oliver was editor of Best American Essays 2009. Oliver’s books on the craft of poetry, A Poetry Handbook and Rules for the Dance, are used widely in writing programs. She is an acclaimed reader and has read in practically every state as well as other countries. She has led workshops at various colleges and universities, and held residencies at Case Western Reserve University, Bucknell University, University of Cincinnati, and Sweet Briar College. From 1995, for five years, she held the Catharine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching at Bennington College. She has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from The Art Institute of Boston (1998), Dartmouth College (2007) and Tufts University (2008). Oliver currently lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the inspiration for much of her work.

My favorite poetry book
By Sally Mae
I absolutely love Mary Oliver's House Of Light poems and find that whenever I need to feel enriched I reach for her book. It is just lovely and rich with wonderful imagery and a tinge of Eastern philosophy sometimes, I think. She is my favorite poet, although I have not liked all her work. This particular book is the best one I've had of her poems and I've given many copies as gifts to those I love best. Thank you Amazon for making it available.

Lovely
By Judy Croome
Mary Oliver really is a magnificent poet - her images of nature conjure up perfect visuals of whatever natural scene she's describing. I do tend to find her poetry very intellectual as opposed to emotional (Charles Bukowski; Pablo Neruda - two of my favourite poets whose work is molten with emotions). However, despite this somewhat austere element to her poetry, her collections are always a worthwhile read and HOUSE OF LIGHT is no exception. Some favourites from the book:"Spring"; "The Hermit Crab"; "The Kingfisher" and the unforgettable, amazing and brilliant "The Summer Day" (with the exquisite ending couplet that resonates so deeply no matter how many times I read it "...Tell me, what is it you plan to do/with your one wild and precious life?"

White Owl
By Future Green Girl
The first Mary Oliver poem I ever read was stapled to a gift basket I received from my company. The occasion was the death of my mother. I read the poem over and over, transfixed, unable to picture anything but the ending image of the transcendent light washing us from our bones. This poem went straight to my core and has never left, 3 years later. She was cremated, delivered to the light, and somehow it was right and fitting that this poem become my sole and proprietary piece of connection. Her works are soaring and filled with buoyancy. Her vision and quiet observation of the world has captured me gently, gently.

Trust Me (The Donovan Family Book 4), by Margaret Watson

Raine Taylor has one goal – justice for her murdered sister. She knows Genie's husband strangled her and left her in an alley – Peter had been threatening to kill his wife for years. The police said there was no proof Peter Northrup killed Genie. So it was up to Raine to make him pay.

When Detective Connor Donovan answers a call about a trespasser outside Northrup's house, he finds a woman running down the street. When he tries to stop her, he's left holding her hoodie as she strikes out like a ninja then vanishes like smoke.

Connor quickly realizes Raine is his mysterious trespasser. Now he has to figure out why she was outside Northrup's house at three A.M. Raine isn't his usual criminal – she's a schoolteacher who coaches a tae-kwon-do team of under-privileged girls. And he's wildly attracted to her.

Raine needs to stay away from Connor. She has a plan to deal with Northrup, and she can't get involved with a cop. But like two magnets drawing together, she can't resist him. Can Connor help her find justice for Genie? Or will her sister's killer claim another victim before they can stop him?

Good read from start to finish
By Mary Gramlich
Raine Taylor has no reason to believe in any law enforcement system. especially the police who have done nothing but brush her off when it comes to her sister’s murder. She knows who did it and if justice is a dish best served cold than this man is going to know what that feels like after she kicks him to the curb. Raine can defend herself and has honed her martial arts skills to perfection, so goading a murderer is not going to have her break a sweat. But Detective Connor Donovan disagrees with her less than great idea and is going to use all of his charms to convince her otherwise especially since he knows what her amazing plan of action is and he does not like it one little bit. Connor and his family have been in law enforcement longer than he likes to think about which given him an edge on getting to the bottom of things. Problem for Connor right now is he is distracted by Raine the woman, and being lost in thought of a gorgeous woman is when you make mistakes.

Convincing Raine to even have a meal with him was a herculean effort but once she did a bigger problem erupted with their inability to keep a comfortable, professional distance. To say there is chemistry between them would be an understatement since they just light up the night with a soul searching kiss. Both know they need to keep a clear head and when an agreement between them to work on resolving Raine’s sisters murder together becomes the best resolution Connor starts to question his judgment. Connor knows Raine wants revenge not justice but he feels teamwork is the only way to keep her safe is if he is right by her side on the street and in the bedroom nonstop. A relationship may freak they both out, and adjusting to something akin to an emotion neither wants to claim is an issue but two great minds can solve a murder or so they hope.

Raine and Connor battle each other as much as they do together but one thing is for sure they can take care of the bad guys during the day and draw strength in each other’s arms every night. No matter what tries to come between them life is so much better when they are together.

I can't wait to read more from the author
By Cranky - The Book Curmudgeon
Although this is book four in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone.

This story centers on Connor Donovan and similar to the rest of his family, he’s involved in law enforcement.

A detective, Connor usually doesn’t take the type of phone call about people trespassing. It’s below his jurisdiction, but that fateful call is going to change his life.

Arriving at the scene, he encounters a woman running and when he engages her, all he’s left with is an item of clothing and a bruised chest from the kick she delivers before vanishing. Not one to be deterred, Connor is determined to uncover the mysterious woman.

Raine Taylor is a martial arts sensei, training underprivileged girls. Her goal, however, is to find the evidence to prove her brother-in-law murdered her sister. This may take her to the edge and over legal channels. The last thing she wants is to get involved with a cop.

If you like romantic suspense, this was a great story with twists and turns along the way. The tension between the two leads was palpable.

Raine is a force to be reckoned with and sometimes, I found her trying. She’s still likable and heroic though.

Connor’s relationship with his family was fantastic. They support each other and they’re the type of family we all want.

I can’t wait to read more from this author and am about to pick up earlier works in the series. I’m a big fan now of the Donovan family.

With thanks to Shy vs. The Writer.

Excellent!
By stacejb
This was my favorite book of the series so far.

I loved Raine. A teacher/tae kwon do instructor at the school, she's very determined to do what's right for the people around her, even risking her own safety to help her students. I also liked that even though she's an independent woman, she's not afraid to admit she needs help proving her sister's husband was the one who killed her.

Connor was great. Even though Raine was fiercely independent, he was patient and waited her out until she admitted she needed his help. Instead of thinking she was crazy he immediately believed her and set aside time to help get justice for her sister. He even took interest in tae kwon do and in Raine's students, which he didn't have to do.

The other Donovan siblings make appearances, as does Rose, their mother. We once again see how great they are with each other, how quickly they accept Raine as one of their own, and how they band together in a time of crisis.

This book could be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading the other books in the series as well simply because they're good.
