I too enjoy countertenor voices tremendously

Although the author is a fluid writer, this book was certainly not what I hoped for. I too enjoy countertenor voices tremendously, and have gotten to know a few fine countertenors. When I saw this book listed, and its subject, I thought this would be right up my alley.
Wrong. It's much more the story of the author's obsession with the singer and their relationship as singer and fan, with the main focus being the author's experiences and feelings. I didn't learn much about James Bowman except in a very scattered way. Disappointing.

Burning in Blueness, The Dark-Light of a Countertenor is an account of a passion for the male high voice that began following a BBC radio broadcast in 1972 featuring countertenor James Bowman. The author became devoted to the art of James Bowman and through regular communication and meetings got to know him over ten years. This book is wonderful. The music is discussed in terms of technique, history and content with fascinating insights from professionals and experts. The life and personality of James Bowman is presented in the context of one who understands and has a sense of the man himself.

The real focus of this work is not a specific performer, but rather it is a study of passion for a specific art form. Maxine Handy takes the reader through a land of misty rivers and moonlit churchyards, evoked by the ethereal sound of the countertenor. Classical and spiritual references from both within James Bowman's repetoire and other sources make this a very thought provoking, completely satisfying read.

Sweet and fresh

Everybody Bugs Out reminds me of all of the relationship drama going down at my middle school. Everybody seems to have a crush, but their crush likes someone else. It is like having a soap opera going on for eight hours a day! I understand how Annabelle feels; not being entirely comfortable acting on a crush. Leslie Margolis has hit on the reality of tween relationships.

In a refreshing break from young adult romances, Annabelle acts like a typical tween girl. She acts exactly the same way that I would, and I can completely relate to both Annabelle and her story. What I love most about Annabelle is her relationship with her friends. They all stand up for each other and share advice, especially about boys.

I really like how the science fair is worked into the plot. There are little updates about how Annabelle's project is progressing all through the book. Oh, and Annabelle has to use some of her famous boy training techniques for the science fair. I never grow tired of reading about her tactics with boys.

The sweet and fresh relationship between Annabelle and Oliver is the spotlight of this book. At first, Oliver seems to be just another rowdy boy in need of training. As it turns out though, Oliver is a nice guy and I can see why Annabelle has a crush on him. Perhaps someday there will be an Oliver for me or one of my friends at school. I hope so.

This cover fits right along with the other two books. I love how the ladybugs form a heart, to represent all the crushes going on. And might that be Annabelle and Oliver sitting there? They seem to be having a good time.

This book totally deserves 5 stars. I definitely recommended this book to 6th graders looking for a laugh, I loved the characters and the whole plot of the story. I couldn't put it down!

Inspiring read and a great insight into what can be done when the odds are against you

Couldn't put this book down once I'd started it, (got my ass kicked from the wife for not coming to bed until almost 4am).

If you're a software developer as I am, you'll probably be able to relate to some of the struggles Duane mentions when building + launching Kashflow (and some earlier products). I personally found the book pretty inspiring and exciting while reading about that particular process.

What made it a 5 star book for me though was that this story was all told from a background which some people might be tempted to use as an excuse for future failure in their lives: bad parents, care system, drug bust, prison, dodgy friends, lack of cash, young family... The simple fact is, if you're willing to work hard enough, are brutally honest and stay open to opportunities then your background doesn't matter that much when it comes to be successful in your field.

Fair play Duane, I hope life brings you even more success. Thanks for inspiring people like myself to pull our proverbial fingers out...

Could not put this book down. It is an inspirational read on the human spirit. Finished reading and started reading again. What one young person accomplished when so much was against any success to a better life than the one that was handed to him. Using what natural talents he had to finally take the right road in life. It is written with humour, not one ounce of self pity or excuses for bad choices. I plan on giving this book as gifts.

A fantastic entrepreneurial journey

I've known Duane for a few years and I've always wondered about the full story of his past - so this book was a delight. Duane is a excellent writer as he takes us on his journey of poor decisions and then good decisions. We see his lowest point and then get to watch him rebuild his life. Most former prisoners don't succeed as well as Duane, but he had a particular sort of grit that led well into entrepreneurship. He built something amazing - not just a piece of software that he sold for millions - he built a brilliant new life from scratch, many ex-cons can't say that. As an American, I found the contrast between American prison and British prison fascinating. In the US prison system, he was treated like human garbage, in the UK prisons he was treated like a human being (this concept of an 'open prison' is alien to American sensibilities). Would Duane have had as much future success if he spent his entire time in the US prison system? Certainly not.

Oil production has been constrained in relation to demand for the past decade, with a resulting four-fold increase in the oil price slowing the entire global economy. High oil prices have encouraged a small increase in oil production, and mostly from the short-lived “fracking revolution,” but enough to be able to claim that “peak oil” was a false prophecy. The high oil price has also engendered massive exploration investments, but remaining hydrocarbon stocks generally offer poor returns in energy (the energy return on investment or EROI) and financial terms, and no longer replace the reserves being produced. As a result, the economically powerful oil companies are under great pressure, both financially and politically, as oil remains the backbone of the global economy.>Development scenarios and political pressure for growth as a means of solving economic woes both require more net energy, which is the amount of energy available after energy (and thus financial) inputs required for new sources to come on line are deducted. In today’s economy, more energy usually means more oil. Although a barrel of oil from any source may look the same, “tight oil” and oil from tar sands require much higher prices to be profitable for the producer; these expensive sources have very different economic implications from the conventional oil supplies that underpinned economic growth for most of the 20th century. The role of oil in the global economy is not easily changed. Since currently installed infrastructure assumes oil, a change implies more than just substitution of an energy source. The speed with which such basic structural changes can be made is also constrained, and ultimately themselves dependent on fossil fuel inputs. It remains unclear how this scenario will evolve, and that uncertainty adds additional economic pressure to the investment decisions that must be made. “Drill baby drill” and new pipeline projects may be attractive politically, but projections of economic and associated oil production growth based on past performance are clearly untenable.

About the Author
Fresh from his university training as a geologist, Sam Carmalt joined a major oil company at the height of the gasoline shortages of the 1970s. His goal was to help find more of the oil that society needs. But he discovered that his employer’s interest was somewhat different -- to make a good financial return. Since then, as an employee, with a major industry consultancy, and as an independent consultant Sam has investigated the interface between energy and the economy. As these relationships undergo significant changes, he provides important insights into how the oil needed for our economy is found and paid for.

A Wonderful Book for the Beginner.

I found this book to be extremely informative, even though it may be missing many artists and albums in its price guide. The information pertaining to what to look for and what *not* to look for helped me immensely when I decided that I wanted to become a collector of vinyl.

Good book but outdated, new price guides available

I purchased this book back in 1997, at that time it was up to date, just
found my old dog eared copy, and it is still an enjoyable reference guide, but there are newer price guides availble now that I would spend my money on.
