This book, Small Group and Team Communication, is a descriptive hands-on guide to success in a group setting. The authors intend to highlight the methods by which groups can achieve success, the problems which groups may encounter, and factors which enable groups to complete their tasks. Besides small group and team communication, various other methods of communication are discussed; nonverbal communication, the use of language, diversity in groups, the norms and behaviors of groups, the roles which certain people play in a group, and the characteristics that are necessary for success.
This book is readable and easy to understand; it has scenarios and discussion questions at the end of each chapter which solidify the material for the reader. These activities aid in the comprehension of the text. It may be necessary to have some prior knowledge of communications before reading this book; it would serve as a backdrop for further appreciation of the ideas represented. This book could very easily be used as a textbook for a communication course; it covers a great deal of ground on the topic of communication. The chapters are organized according to facets of group communication, such as decision making and problem solving, listening and feedback, creativity in small groups, diversity, four phases of group development, norms and roles, and conflict management, to name a few.
This book uses a great deal of references and ideas which are discussed in most communication texts. It brings together the various approaches and ideas that are in circulation about group communication and ties them together in a comprehensive and inclusive manner. There is a glossary, index, and it even includes popular testing methods to determine a person's skill and role as a group member.
I would recommend this book to professors for use in the classroom, and also as a resource for a research paper on group communication.

Harris Hits Home Run

Author Thomas Harris hits a home run with this very readable textbook about small group communications. Harris effectively covers all of the basic information needed for a solid foundation in the topic. The textbook is user friendly and provides a good jump off point for additional research on the subject. It is an excellent choice for an introductory course on group dynamics.

About the Author
Serena Nanda is professor emeritus of anthropology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Her most recent book is THE GIFT OF THE BRIDE: A TALE OF ANTHROPOLOGY, MATRIMONY, AND MURDER, a novel set in an Indian immigrant community in New York City. Her other published works include NEITHER MAN NOR WOMAN: THE HIJRAS OF INDIA, winner of the 1990 Ruth Benedict Prize; AMERICAN CULTURAL PLURALISM AND LAW; GENDER DIVERSITY: CROSS-CULTURAL VARIATIONS; and a New York City guidebook, NEW YORK MORE THAN EVER: 40 PERFECT DAYS IN AND AROUND THE CITY. She has always been captivated by the stories people tell and by the tapestry of human diversity. Anthropology was the perfect way for her to immerse herself in these passions, and through teaching, to spread the word about the importance of understanding both human differences and human similarities.

Richard L. Warms is professor of anthropology at Texas State University-San Marcos. His published works include ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEORY: AN INTRODUCTORY HISTORY and SACRED REALMS: ESSAYS IN RELIGION, BELIEF, AND SOCIETY, as well as journal articles on commerce, religion, and ethnic identity in West Africa; African exploration and romanticism; and African veterans of French colonial armed forces. Warms's interests in anthropology were kindled by college courses and by his experiences as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa. He has traveled extensively in Africa, Europe, and Asia. He continues to teach Introduction to Cultural Anthropology every year but also teaches classes in anthropological theory, the anthropology of religion, economic anthropology, and film at both the undergraduate and graduate level. His current projects include an encyclopedia of theory in social and cultural anthropology and a book about the development of anthropology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stephen Kendrick is a speaker, screenwriter, and producer whose film credits include "Flywheel", "Facing the Giants", "Fireproof", and "Courageous". Stephen co-authored the "New York Times" bestsellers "The Love Dare" and "The Resolution for Men". The main argument: As much as we rely on our brains to navigate the complex world before us, anyone who has ever forgotten someone's name, or misread a situation, or made a poor decision in the heat of the moment knows that the brain does not always work as we would want. In his new book `Brain Bugs', neurobiologist Dean Buonomano explores the brain's many pitfalls and mistakes (and how and why it makes them), and also offers up some advice on how we can best manage these so called `brain bugs' in our everyday lives.

Buonomano identifies 3 major sources whence brain bugs originate. The first has to do with the fact that our brains are the product of evolution, and have evolved as they have to answer the specific challenges that we faced in our evolutionary history; therefore, while our brains may be well adapted to perform functions that were particularly important in our survival and reproduction in the environment in which our species evolved, they may not do as well at functions which, though handy, did not figure as prominently in our evolutionary past (remembering names seems to fall under this category). The second source of our brain bugs may be attributed to the fact that while evolution has brought us a host of useful mental abilities that have allowed us to survive and thrive, it is still a rather clumsy process, and as such does not always offer up perfect, or even optimal solutions; thus the mental systems that we have are sometimes prone to error and quirky behaviour (hence optical illusions, the ever raging and somewhat awkward battle between our reason and our impulses, and a number of other interesting effects). Finally, the third source of our brain bugs stems from the fact that while many of the brain systems that we have inherited were well adapted to the environment in which our species evolved, this environment has changed considerably in the recent past, to the point where some of the adaptations themselves may be ineffective and even counter-productive today (our craving of sugary, fatty foods, for instance, would have been very useful in the environment in which we evolved--where starvation was much more of a threat than heart disease, but can be positively disastrous in the modern world, where the opposite is more often the case). Better popular science books to be had out there.

While covering a very interesting topic by a undoubtedly talented author, the book falls short of other similar books in the field of psychology. The author's writing is very slow to start, dancing around the same topic endless without exploring it in depth or giving concrete real world examples. This is somewhat remedied near the end of the book but 70 pages could be cut from the book and express the same ideas clearly.

As regular reader of popular science psychology books, I thought my opinion of the book might have been tainted by nostalgia and familiarity with the concepts but upon rereading passages from previous books I found that this was not the case. If you are looking for more enjoyable books in the same area I suggest reading:

Stumbling on Happiness
The Paradox of Choice
How we Decide
Spent: Sex, Evolution, and Consumer Behavior

All of the above provide a more enjoyable experience by engaging the reader with interesting in-book activities and well paced writing.

Brain Bugs; an overview and assessment

In this review I plan to give a brief overview of the content of BRAIN BUGS, some of the author's stylistic choices and opinions, and my reactions to them. As well, an overall opinion of the book.

Buonomano explores the nature of the human brain and its most apparent flaws, separating the book into 9 chapters 7 of which are devoted to specific "brain bugs", or in other terms, common pervasive cognitive mistakes that affect all of us in ways ranging from funny and annoying to downright deadly. The first chapter is simply an introduction into the associative architecture of the brain and the last chapter serves as a conclusion.

Despite the author's categorization of this book, I break the book into two basics categories. The first category (the one I prefer) is where the author actually tries to teach the reader about brain structure and function. He dives into Hebbian plasticity, action potentials, synapses, and neurotransmitters. Best of all, he creates really great analogies throughout that make these concepts more tangible and easier to process. I'll give an example (other than comparing a brain to a computer). The author illustrates the concept of a synapse as akin to a game show where the contestant has to decide between two answers and is allowed to poll the audience. "Some members of the audience have louder voices than others, or some are known to be more reliable. The behavior of a given neuron is determined by the net sum of what thousands of presynaptic neurons are telling it". This analogy the author makes in the first chapter "The Memory Webb" helped me understand that Hebbian Plasticity was sort of like a contestant yelling out an answer and then the contestant immediately listening and answering the question, and increasing the likely hood that this would happen in the future, "cells that wire together fire together". The entire book is full of helpful comparisons such as these. and to the author's credit with every analogy he makes he clearly states its shortcomings and how in some cases it defiantly is not a good representation of neural anatomy or biology.

The second category that i break this book into (a significantly smaller portion) is where the author sheds his role of helpful instructor and takes on the role of opinionated scientist who takes for granted that any kind of religious belief is illogical and that having one is evidence of maladaptive neural circuitry caused by the evolutionary process. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and Buonomano makes (for the most part) a very logical case for what he says, but I felt much of what the author says about religion (there is a surprisingly large amount) had no place in this book. He devotes an entire chapter to it entitled "The Supernatural Bug". The farthest I think the author should have gone on this topic is to investigate the tendency of people to believe in things that are not scientifically provable. The route he takes is a bit more offensive. As I am writing a review and not a rebuttal I won't go to much into this, I just think that anyone who is considering reading this book should know that the author spends a considerable amount of time making a case for atheism. I was not expecting this when I started reading this book and was sort of blind sided by it.

The most interesting part of this book by far is chapter six entitled "Unreasonable Reasoning". In this chapter the author touches on manipulative psychological techniques such as framing, Anchoring and Loss aversion. The truly fascinating part of this chapter however is the part that deals with probability blindness. Essentially all the tricks that a casino uses in order for people to think that games aren't as unfair as they actually are and other things of that nature. To illustrate his points he poses a few statistical questions to the reader that seem quite obvious, I got literally every one of them wrong. Perhaps most interestingly, he explains the Monty Hall Problem in a way that actually makes sense. For those who don't know the Monty Hall problem is essentially a problem where someone has to guess between three containers to find one prize. After guessing Monty Hall reveals that there is no prize in one of the unpicked containers, the person is then asked if they would like to change their choice and statistically speaking the answer should always be yes. I won't spoil the explanation, but trust me its great.

All in all this book is well written, informative, and interesting. If you don't hold any strong religious views or like learning about the points of view of people who disagree with you I recommend this book. If I am to be brutally honest though, this book is really just a less awesome version of BRAIN RULES (written by John Medina), and because it focuses solely on the brain's flaws its kind of a bummer.

"You Don Jaun toes?"

30-odd years on, this is still one of the funniest books I ever read. My family are all travel agents, and we all have a soft spot for travel-industry related humor. We all practically memorized this one. We would read it out loud to each other, passing it on when the reader couldn't get out another word because they were laughing so hard. I wish we still had our copy, but my sister lost it!
Loosely organized by subject, following the outline of a hotel stay, from trying to make a reservation, to trying to check in, the room, the bathroom, trying to order from room service... Just the subject of the hotel bathroom alone includes some of my very favorite bits: "SOB (Shelf on Brackets)," "The Wayward Schpritzer," "Sanitized For Your Protection" (these are my titles, I haven't seen the actual text in some 15 years, so this is from memory).
I've seen two of the very funniest bits from this book, "The Bath-Size Bar of Dial Soap Letters" and the immortal "Room Service Order" circulating as internet jokes / urban legends, claimed to be taken from true life incidents, and uncredited to Mr. Berman. Well, at least I know, and I can enjoy them all over again.

This whole book is totally worth it... the best 'chapter' is called "Room Service." GREAT! This story has been a joke in my family for nearly 40 years now, and we still laugh and laugh every time it's read. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Plus, it is a difficult book to find in book stores.

Time to fight back.

If you want to get off your duff and be pro-active in going after telemarketers, I recommend this book. It's easy to read and makes a good starting point to get going.
You need to be aware that some of the information given is outdated and in a couple instances, incorrect. So when you begin your suit against a company, be sure to double check the statutes that you are using. Thanks to this book, I currently have four cases started against telemarketers. Now. Go get em!!!

Too Mush Legal

I thought it was a joke and partly it is. "How To Sue A Telemarketer: A Manual For Restoring Peace On Earth One Phone Call At A Time" is a book by Stephen Ostrow. I figured I could use some humor in my life.

It turns out to be a cute little book. And it certainly does add some humour to life. I am sort of hoping a telemarketer calls me now.

Interestingly enough it actually contains real information on how to sue in small claims court. Of course I am certain the time payoff is definitely not there and I would suggest you get a real life if you have time to do that.

What you can sue for:
1. Calling a residential telephone number that is on the National Do Not Call Registry;
2. Using a pre-recorded dialing device to initiate a commercial sale;
3. Using a blocked telephone number when initiating a commercial sale;
4. Soliciting a consumer before 8am or after 9pm;
5. Failure to provide a copy of the company's Do Not Call Manual after demand for a copy;

More interestingly, there is also a good case to sue for junk faxes.

Too much legal for me. Funny book though.

Entertaining but new wrinkles: 1) Caller ID reads "BLOCKED CALL". 2) A local number appears but there is no answer when I return the call to check if real ("spoofing"). 3) Caller ID shows area code 525. THAT IS FROM MEXICO CITY - Frequently used by crooks.
Steve Ostrow says that a successful lawsuit depends upon having obtained the Name of the Company and the Phone Number. My phone company has NO suggestions. Guess we're just SOL for now.

If you are going to study Gaelic - and I recommend you do! - then this book is an excellent choice. I first bought the Kindle version. Now, I love my Kindle, but reading this book is best done with a hard copy in your hand and with the CD present.

Commenting on the book WITH CD, and you would be hard pressed to find a better beginning book. The lessons are graded appropriately for the level of learning, the material is appropriate and interesting, and with the assistance of the CD, you should be able to get a good grasp of the language in a few months. Using this book you will find that you need to skim back and forth to refresh your memory. You will be asked to check out the appropriate passage on the CD. This mixed media approach can be a boost for your memory, and I heartily recommend using the CD too.

Now to the Kindle version. I was unable to get the CD for download. It may be out there somewhere, but I could not find it. I also very quickly found that moving back and forth in the e-book was not easy, and that made my experience less successful. You can do it, the book is all there and it is an excellent book. In my experience though, as a lover of e-book format, you would be better advised to buy the hard copy version with the CD.

Same as Teach Yourself Gaelic

I was going to buy this, but then I compared the first chapter to "Teach Yourself Gaelic" which came out a number of years ago. The text is exactly the same in the first chapter. So if you have that book and CDs or cassettes, this appears to be the same. The Teach Yourself Gaelic book and CDs can often be found at the library if you prefer to give it a try before you buy. I find the book an excellent addition to the others that I have. Each book has its own strengths and weaknesses, so if you want to learn the language, you will probably find yourself buying more that one to get a different presentation.
